Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec

Hi everyone,

My 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec has been giving me headaches with its infotainment system. The upper screen frequently freezes, becoming completely unresponsive. It usually happens when I'm using Apple CarPlay, which also tends to disconnect randomly, even with a new cable.

Sometimes it reboots itself, but other times I have to pull over and turn the car off and on again to get it working. It's really frustrating, especially on longer drives. Is this a common problem for the 2018 TLX, and has anyone found a reliable fix for this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Infotainment system freezing and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto disconnects are common complaints across various vehicle brands, and the 2018 Acura TLX is not immune. These issues often stem from a combination of software, hardware, and external factors.

  1. Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of the infotainment system. On most TLX models, this can be done by pressing and holding the audio system power button for about 5-10 seconds until the system reboots. This can clear temporary glitches.
  2. Software Updates: Ensure your infotainment system software is up to date. Acura periodically releases updates that address bugs and improve system stability and connectivity. A dealership can check for and install these updates.
  3. USB Cable Quality: Even new cables can be faulty. Always use a high-quality, MFi-certified (Made for iPhone) USB cable for Apple CarPlay. Generic or cheap cables are a frequent cause of intermittent connectivity issues. Try multiple different high-quality cables.
  4. Phone Software: Ensure your iPhone or Android phone's operating system is updated to the latest version. Outdated phone software can sometimes cause compatibility problems.
  5. Phone Settings: Check your phone's settings for CarPlay/Android Auto. Ensure permissions are granted and there are no restrictions that might cause disconnects.

When to see a shop:

  • If the soft reset, software updates, and cable changes do not resolve the issue.
  • If the system freezes consistently or becomes completely unresponsive, suggesting a deeper hardware or software fault within the head unit itself.
  • If diagnostic codes related to the infotainment system (e.g., U0100 for lost communication with ECM/PCM, or specific infotainment module codes) are present. A dealership can run a full diagnostic to identify internal module errors or wiring issues.
