Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX V6 Advance

Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 Acura TLX V6 Advance with about 75,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a slight shuddering sensation, especially when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds, around 20-40 mph. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable and a bit concerning.

I'm wondering if this could be related to the transmission fluid. I haven't had it changed yet, and I know Acura transmissions can be particular. Is this a common symptom for fluid that needs replacing? I'm pretty handy with DIY projects and was thinking of attempting a 3x3 fluid change myself.

Any advice on the process or if this is even the right diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. What type of fluid should I use?

It's very common for Acura TLX models, especially the V6 with the 9-speed automatic, to experience shuddering or slight hesitation when the transmission fluid is nearing the end of its service life. At 75,000 miles, it's definitely time for a transmission fluid service.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Transmission Fluid Change (3x3 Method): The 3x3 method is highly recommended for Acura transmissions. This involves draining and refilling the transmission fluid three times, driving a short distance (e.g., 5-10 miles) between each drain/refill cycle. This helps to dilute and replace more of the old fluid that remains in the torque converter and other internal components. You will need approximately 12-13 quarts of fluid for a full 3x3 service.
  2. Correct Fluid Type: Always use genuine Acura DW-1 Automatic Transmission Fluid. Using aftermarket or incorrect fluid types can lead to further transmission issues or even damage. Do not substitute with other brands, even if they claim to be compatible.
  3. Check for External Filter: Some Acura transmissions have an external filter that should also be replaced during this service. Consult your owner's manual or a service diagram for your specific 2018 TLX V6 to confirm if yours has one and its location.
  4. Causes of Shudder: The shudder is often caused by the fluid losing its lubricating and friction-modifying properties over time, leading to inconsistent engagement of the clutch packs within the transmission. Old fluid can also become contaminated with metallic particles, further exacerbating the issue.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the shuddering persists or worsens significantly after performing the 3x3 fluid change.
  • If you notice any warning lights on your dashboard related to the transmission.
  • If you experience hard shifts, gear slippage, or difficulty engaging gears.
  • If you find significant metal shavings in the drained fluid (a small amount of fine sediment is normal, but chunks are not).

While a fluid change often resolves this common issue, persistent problems could indicate more serious internal transmission wear, which would require professional diagnosis.
