Vehicle: 2020 Acura TLX Technology Package

Hello fellow TLX owners,

I'm having a persistent and concerning issue with my 2020 Acura TLX Technology Package. The Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) seems to be giving me false warnings. I'll be driving on a clear road, sometimes with no cars ahead, and suddenly I get the 'BRAKE!' warning and sometimes even a light tap on the brakes.

It's really startling and feels unsafe. I've checked the sensors on the grille and windshield, and they seem clear. Is this a known glitch for the 2020 models? What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

False collision warnings from the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) in your 2020 Acura TLX can be unsettling and are a serious concern. The AcuraWatch suite of safety features relies on sophisticated sensors that can sometimes be overly sensitive or miscalibrated.

  1. Sensor Obstruction: Even if they appear clear, ensure the front radar sensor (located behind the Acura emblem in the grille) and the windshield-mounted camera sensor are absolutely free of dirt, ice, snow, or even heavy rain/fog. A tiny speck can sometimes cause issues. Regularly clean these areas.
  2. Environmental Factors: CMBS can sometimes react to reflections from guardrails, metal fences, or vehicles in adjacent lanes on curves. Strong sunlight or shadows can also occasionally confuse the system. While not a 'fix,' understanding these conditions can help.
  3. Sensor Recalibration: After certain events (like a minor collision, windshield replacement, or even a hard bump), the sensors might need recalibration. If the sensors are out of alignment by even a fraction of a degree, it can lead to false positives. This requires specialized equipment and should be done by an Acura dealership.
  4. Software Glitches: Like other electronic systems, the AcuraWatch system relies on software. An outdated or buggy software version could lead to erroneous readings. Check with your dealer for any available software updates for the AcuraWatch system.
  5. Wiring or Module Issues: Less common, but a fault in the wiring harness connecting the sensors or a problem with the CMBS control module itself could cause these issues. A diagnostic scan might reveal codes such as U0401 (Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM) or specific codes related to the radar/camera units.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately, if the false warnings are frequent or cause the vehicle to brake unexpectedly, creating a safety hazard.
  • If cleaning the sensors doesn't help.
  • If you've recently had any front-end work or windshield replacement.
  • For a professional diagnostic scan. An Acura dealership has the tools to properly diagnose and recalibrate the AcuraWatch system, ensuring it functions correctly and safely.
