Vehicle: 2020 Acura TLX A-Spec

Hey everyone, I've been noticing a really annoying clunking sound coming from the front end of my 2020 Acura TLX A-Spec recently. It seems to happen most often when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement at low speeds. It's definitely more noticeable on the driver's side, but sometimes I hear it from both sides.

I've tried bouncing the front of the car when it's parked, but I don't hear anything then. The steering feels okay, no pulling or looseness that I can tell, but the noise is starting to get on my nerves. It sounds like something is loose.

Has anyone else experienced this with their TLX, especially the 2020 model year? What could be causing this? Any common issues I should look into before taking it to the dealer? I'd appreciate any advice!

A clunking noise from the front suspension is a common complaint and can indicate several issues. It's important to address this promptly as suspension components are critical for safety and handling.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Inspect Visually:

    • Park your vehicle on a level surface.
    • Look for any obvious signs of damage, leaks (from struts), or loose components around the front wheels.
    • Check for torn rubber boots on ball joints or tie rod ends.
  2. Check Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common source of clunking noises, especially over bumps. The bushings or ball joints within the links can wear out, causing play. You might be able to feel play by trying to move the sway bar link by hand when the car is on a lift or jack stands (with the suspension unloaded).

  3. Examine Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings that connect the control arms to the chassis can wear out, crack, or tear. When these fail, metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement can cause a clunk. This is often more noticeable during braking, acceleration, or going over bumps.

  4. Inspect Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints (depending on your TLX's suspension design) can create a clunking sound. These are safety-critical; if they fail, you could lose control of the wheel.

  5. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The strut mount, which attaches the top of the strut to the car's body, can wear out. The bearing within the mount allows the strut to turn with the steering. If these fail, they can cause clunking or popping noises, especially when turning or going over bumps.

  6. Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a bolt for a suspension component might have loosened over time.

When to See a Shop: You should definitely take your 2020 Acura TLX to a trusted mechanic or Acura dealership if:

  • You're uncomfortable performing a visual inspection yourself.
  • You identify any significant wear or damage during your inspection.
  • The noise persists or worsens.
  • You notice any changes in steering feel, handling, or braking.

Ignoring suspension noises can lead to more expensive repairs down the line or, more importantly, compromise your vehicle's safety. A professional can properly diagnose the exact cause using specialized tools and techniques.
