Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec

I'm having a persistent and annoying problem with the infotainment system in my 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec. It seems like every other drive, the dual screens will freeze completely. Sometimes it's the navigation, other times it's the audio controls.

When it freezes, nothing responds, and then after a minute or two, the whole system just reboots itself. This also affects my Apple CarPlay, which frequently disconnects or won't even connect in the first place.

Has anyone else experienced this with their TLX? It's really frustrating when you're trying to use navigation or make a call. Any tips or tricks to fix this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches, including freezing and random restarts, are common across many modern vehicles, and the 2018 Acura TLX is no exception. These issues can be incredibly frustrating, especially with integrated features like Apple CarPlay.

Here are some steps and potential causes to consider:

  1. Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of the infotainment system. This is usually done by holding down the audio power button for several seconds (typically 5-10 seconds) until the system reboots. This can sometimes clear temporary software bugs.
  2. Check for Updates: Visit your Acura dealership to inquire about any available software updates for your infotainment system. Manufacturers often release patches to address known bugs and improve system stability.
  3. Inspect USB Cables/Ports: If Apple CarPlay is frequently disconnecting, try using a different, high-quality USB cable. Also, inspect the USB port for any debris or damage.
  4. Causes:
    • Software Bugs: The most frequent cause of freezing and random reboots.
    • Overheating: Prolonged use or high ambient temperatures can sometimes cause the head unit to overheat and temporarily malfunction.
    • Loose Connections: Internal wiring or external connections to the head unit could be loose.
    • Failing Hardware: In some cases, the infotainment head unit itself might be developing a fault.

When to See a Shop: If soft resets and cable checks don't resolve the problem, or if the issue becomes more frequent and severe, it's time to visit your Acura dealership. While infotainment issues rarely trigger standard OBD-II check engine codes, a dealership can perform a diagnostic scan using their specialized tools to check for internal communication errors (e.g., B-codes related to body electronics or U-codes for network communication) within the infotainment system. They can also diagnose hardware failures and recommend replacement if necessary.
