Vehicle: 2022 Acura TLX SH-AWD

I bought a new 2022 Acura TLX SH-AWD about a year ago, and it has around 15,000 miles on it. For the past couple of months, I've been dealing with an annoying brake squeal, especially at low speeds.

It's a high-pitched squeak that happens almost every time I come to a stop. On top of that, I've started to notice a vibration through the steering wheel when I brake from higher speeds, like on the highway.

Are these common issues for the 2022 TLX? What could be causing both the squeal and the vibration? I feel like my brakes shouldn't be acting up this much already.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Brake squeal and steering wheel vibration during braking are common complaints, but at 15,000 miles on a 2022 Acura TLX, it's a bit early for significant issues unless usage has been particularly hard or there's a manufacturing defect. These symptoms point to different aspects of your braking system.

Here's what's likely happening and what to do:

  1. Brake Squeal:
    • Causes: Often caused by worn brake pads (the wear indicator scraping the rotor), glazed pads, or minor vibrations between the pads, calipers, and rotors. Sometimes, it's simply dust or moisture on the pads.
    • Solution: A technician will inspect pad thickness. If pads are good, they might clean and lubricate the caliper pins and backing plates, or apply anti-squeal compound to the back of the pads. If pads are glazed, they might be lightly sanded.
  2. Steering Wheel Vibration (Brake Judder):
    • Causes: Almost always indicative of warped brake rotors (discs). Uneven heating and cooling, or improper torque during wheel installation, can cause the rotor surface to become uneven. When the brake pads contact this uneven surface, it transmits a vibration through the caliper to the steering wheel.
    • Solution: Rotors can sometimes be resurfaced (machined flat) if they have enough material remaining, or they will need to be replaced. It's often recommended to replace pads when replacing or resurfacing rotors to ensure even contact.

When to See a Shop: Given that you have both squealing and vibration at relatively low mileage, it's highly recommended to take your 2022 TLX to an Acura dealership or a trusted independent mechanic immediately. While there are no specific OBD-II codes for these issues (unless it's an ABS system fault, which is unlikely here), a professional inspection is necessary. They will measure rotor runout, check pad thickness, inspect calipers for sticking, and identify the root cause. Addressing these issues promptly will prevent further wear, potential safety concerns, and more costly repairs down the line.
