Vehicle: 2016 Acura TLX V6 Advance

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some pretty rough shifting in my 2016 Acura TLX V6 Advance, which has the 9-speed automatic transmission. Specifically, it feels like it's jerking into gear, especially at lower speeds or when downshifting. Sometimes there's a noticeable hesitation before it engages a gear.

It's got about 75,000 miles on it, and I've kept up with all the regular maintenance. I'm worried this might be a bigger issue. Has anyone else with a 2016 TLX V6 experienced this? What was the fix?

Thanks for any insights!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and hesitation in the 2016 Acura TLX V6, particularly with the ZF 9-speed automatic transmission, is a known concern for some owners. This issue can stem from several factors, often related to the transmission's complex electronic controls and mechanical components.

  1. Software Updates: The most common initial solution is a transmission software update. Acura has released several updates to improve shift logic, smoothness, and engagement for this transmission. A dealership visit is required to check for and apply the latest software. This often resolves minor jerking or hesitation.
  2. Transmission Fluid Condition: While you've kept up with maintenance, the transmission fluid's condition is critical. Even if changed, sometimes a specific flush procedure or using only genuine Acura DW-1 fluid (or the specified ZF fluid) is necessary. Contaminated or incorrect fluid can lead to poor performance. A diagnostic scan might reveal codes like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific gear ratio errors (e.g., P0731 for 1st gear, P0732 for 2nd gear) if the issue is severe.
  3. Solenoid or Valve Body Issues: Internal transmission components like solenoids (which control fluid flow) or the valve body itself can wear or become faulty, leading to inconsistent shifting. This is a more involved repair and typically requires professional diagnosis.
  4. Torque Converter: In rarer cases, a failing torque converter can cause shuddering or hesitation, especially during acceleration or gear changes.

When to see a shop:

  • If a transmission software update doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If the problem worsens, including slipping gears, grinding noises, or the check engine light illuminates.
  • If you notice any fluid leaks.
  • For a comprehensive diagnostic scan, especially if you suspect internal component failure. A qualified Acura technician can perform specific diagnostic tests and pinpoint the exact cause of the problem.
