Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX V6 A-Spec

Hey everyone,

I've had my 2018 Acura TLX V6 A-Spec for about a year now, and I've noticed some pretty rough shifting, especially from 1st to 2nd gear. It's not every time, but it's frequent enough to be concerning. Sometimes there's a noticeable jolt, and other times it feels like it hesitates before engaging the next gear.

I'm wondering if this is a known characteristic of the TLX's 9-speed automatic transmission, or if it's something I should be worried about. I've heard some things about these transmissions, but I'm not sure if my experience is typical or if I should take it in for service.

Has anyone else with a 2016-2020 TLX V6 experienced similar issues? What did you do about it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's understandable to be concerned about rough shifting in your 2018 Acura TLX V6 A-Spec. The ZF 9-speed automatic transmission used in many Acura models from 2015-2020, including your TLX, has been known to exhibit some unique shifting characteristics, which can sometimes be perceived as rough or hesitant.

Here's what you should know and what steps you can take:

  1. Understand the ZF 9-Speed Characteristics: This transmission is designed to maximize fuel efficiency and performance, often leading to a busy shifting pattern. Some drivers report that the transmission 'learns' driving styles, and initial shifts can feel less refined. However, consistently harsh shifts are not normal.

  2. Check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs): Acura has released several TSBs related to the ZF 9-speed transmission for various models, including the TLX. These often involve software updates to improve shift quality and address specific issues like harsh downshifts or delayed engagement. Your dealership can check if your vehicle is eligible for any outstanding software updates. For example, TSB 19-001 (for 2015-2017 TLX V6) and subsequent updates aimed at improving shift feel are common.

  3. Transmission Fluid Condition: Over time, transmission fluid can degrade, leading to less efficient lubrication and potentially rougher shifts. While your vehicle is relatively new, if it has high mileage or has been driven hard, a transmission fluid flush and refill with genuine Acura DW-1 fluid might help. This is typically recommended around 60,000-90,000 miles, but can be done sooner if issues persist.

  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent Harshness: If the rough shifts are consistent, severe, or accompanied by unusual noises (clunks, grinding).
    • Warning Lights: If the 'Check Engine' light or a transmission-specific warning light illuminates on your dashboard. This could indicate a fault code (e.g., P0700 - Transmission Control System Malfunction, or specific gear ratio errors).
    • Loss of Power or Limp Mode: If the vehicle enters 'limp mode' (reduced power, limited gears), it's crucial to get it inspected immediately.

We recommend scheduling an appointment with an authorized Acura dealership. Describe the symptoms clearly, mentioning the specific gears where you feel the rough shifts. They can check for TSBs, perform diagnostic scans for any stored fault codes, and assess the transmission's overall health.
