Vehicle: 2025 Acura ZDX Type S

Hello ZDX owners,

I recently got my 2025 Acura ZDX Type S, and I'm noticing that the charging speeds are significantly slower than what's advertised, especially on DC fast chargers. I'm using reputable charging stations, and my previous EV had no issues at these same locations.

For example, I'm rarely seeing speeds above 100 kW, even when the battery is low (below 30%) and the charger is rated for much higher. At home, my Level 2 charger also seems a bit slower than expected. Is there a setting I'm missing, or could this be an issue with the car itself?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Slower-than-expected EV charging can be frustrating and has several potential causes. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Battery Temperature: EV batteries charge optimally within a specific temperature range. If the battery is too cold (common in winter) or too hot (after aggressive driving or in extreme heat), the car's Battery Management System (BMS) will limit charging speeds to protect the battery.
  2. Charger & Grid Limitations: While a charger might be rated for high power, its actual output can be limited by the station's grid connection, concurrent users, or even the specific charging cable's capacity. Try different chargers and stations.
  3. State of Charge (SoC): Charging speed is not linear. DC fast charging typically tapers off significantly as the battery's state of charge increases (e.g., above 80%), as the BMS balances cells and prevents overcharging.
  4. Software Glitch: A software bug in the BMS could be incorrectly limiting charging. Ensure your ZDX has the latest software updates, as these often include charging optimization patches.
  5. Vehicle Settings: Double-check your ZDX's charging settings within the infotainment system. Some EVs have options to limit charging current or set schedules that might inadvertently be affecting your speeds.

When to See a Shop: If you've ruled out external factors (charger, temperature, SoC) and your ZDX consistently charges much slower than expected, especially at home on a known good Level 2 charger, it's time to visit the dealership. A diagnostic scan can reveal codes related to the charging system (e.g., P0A0F - High Voltage Battery Charger Fault, P0AA6 - Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) or the BMS, indicating a potential hardware issue with the onboard charger, battery pack, or related components.
