Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor

Hey everyone,

I've been getting intermittent '12V Battery Low' warnings on the dashboard of my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor. Sometimes the car struggles to 'wake up' or the infotainment system takes a while to load. It's not the main high-voltage battery, I know that.

Is this a common issue for Polestar 2s? What usually causes the 12V battery to drain, and is replacing it a DIY job, or should I take it to a service center? If DIY, what type of battery do I need?

Experiencing '12V Battery Low' warnings and slow system startup in your 2022 Polestar 2 is a relatively common issue for EVs, including Polestar. While your main high-voltage battery powers the drivetrain, the 12V battery is crucial for starting the vehicle's electronics, infotainment, lights, and other accessories.

Common Causes of 12V Battery Drain/Failure:

  1. Normal Wear and Tear: Like any lead-acid battery, the 12V battery has a finite lifespan, typically 3-5 years, depending on usage and climate.
  2. Parasitic Drain: A component in the vehicle may be continuously drawing power even when the car is off, slowly draining the battery.
  3. Software Glitches: In some cases, software issues can prevent the DC-DC converter (which charges the 12V battery from the high-voltage pack) from functioning optimally.
  4. Infrequent Driving: If the car sits for extended periods, the 12V battery can discharge, especially if there's a small parasitic drain.

DIY 12V Battery Replacement (Polestar 2):

Replacing the 12V battery in a Polestar 2 is generally a straightforward DIY task for those comfortable with basic car maintenance. However, caution is advised.

  1. Battery Type: The Polestar 2 typically uses an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) 12V battery. You'll need to match the size (Group size, e.g., H5/Group 47 or H6/Group 48) and cold cranking amps (CCA) of the original battery. Check your owner's manual or the existing battery for specifications.
  2. Location: The 12V battery in the Polestar 2 is located in the frunk (front trunk).
  3. Tools Needed: You'll typically need a wrench for the battery terminals (usually 10mm or 13mm) and possibly a socket wrench for the hold-down clamp.
  4. Procedure:
    • Safety First: Ensure the vehicle is off. Wear gloves and eye protection. Always disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, then the positive (+).
    • Remove Hold-Down: Loosen and remove the battery hold-down clamp.
    • Remove Old Battery: Carefully lift out the old battery. It can be heavy.
    • Clean Tray: Clean any corrosion or debris from the battery tray.
    • Install New Battery: Place the new battery in the tray, secure the hold-down clamp.
    • Connect Terminals: Connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (-). Ensure they are tight.
    • Check Systems: Start the car and check if the warnings are gone and systems are functioning normally. You might need to reset some infotainment settings.

When to See a Shop:

  • Persistent Warnings: If the '12V Battery Low' warning returns shortly after replacement, or if the car still struggles, there might be an underlying issue like a parasitic drain or a fault with the DC-DC converter.
  • Uncomfortable with DIY: If you're not confident working with batteries or electrical systems.
  • No Tools: If you lack the necessary tools for safe removal and installation.
  • Warranty Concerns: For newer vehicles, a dealer might prefer to diagnose to ensure no warranty issues are overlooked.
