Vehicle: 2020 Polestar 1

Hello Polestar community,

I own a 2020 Polestar 1, and I've recently encountered a 'Hybrid System Malfunction' warning on my dashboard. Simultaneously, the car feels like it's running solely on the gasoline engine, and I'm experiencing significantly reduced power, almost like a limp mode.

The battery indicator shows no charge, and it won't accept a charge from either my home charger or public stations. There's no specific OBD-II code I can pull with my generic scanner, just the general warning.

Has anyone with a Polestar 1 seen this issue? What could be causing the hybrid system to completely shut down and refuse charging? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'Hybrid System Malfunction' combined with reduced power and no charging capability on your 2020 Polestar 1 indicates a significant issue within the high-voltage (HV) system. Since the Polestar 1 is a sophisticated plug-in hybrid, these systems are complex and require specialized attention.

Potential causes for this type of failure include:

  1. High Voltage Battery Pack Issue: This is a primary suspect. It could be a fault within the battery management system (BMS), a cell imbalance, or a complete failure of a battery module. If the BMS detects a critical error, it will shut down the HV system for safety.
  2. Inverter/Converter Failure: The inverter is responsible for converting DC power from the battery to AC power for the electric motors, and vice-versa for charging. A fault here would prevent both electric propulsion and charging.
  3. Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: If the OBC itself has failed, it would explain why the car isn't accepting a charge from any source.
  4. High Voltage Wiring or Connector Issues: Damage or corrosion in the high-voltage wiring or connectors can interrupt power flow and trigger system warnings.
  5. Software Glitch: While less likely to cause a complete shutdown, a severe software bug in the hybrid control unit could potentially lead to such symptoms.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediate Professional Diagnosis Required: This is not a DIY fix. A 'Hybrid System Malfunction' is a critical warning. Continuing to drive the vehicle could exacerbate the problem or pose a safety risk.
  • Polestar Service Center: The Polestar 1 requires highly specialized diagnostic tools and expertise. You should contact your nearest Polestar service center immediately. They have the training and equipment to safely diagnose and repair high-voltage systems. Do not attempt to open or tamper with any orange high-voltage cables or components.
