Vehicle: 2021 Polestar 1

Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with my 2021 Polestar 1. This morning, I got a 'Hybrid System Malfunction' warning light on the dashboard, and now the car won't accept a charge from either my home Level 2 charger or a public DC fast charger. The charging port light just blinks red or stays off.

Performance also feels a bit off, like it's running solely on the combustion engine and not engaging the electric motors as it should. I tried restarting the car a few times, but the warning persists. Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 1, and what was the fix? I'm worried about driving it like this.

A 'Hybrid System Malfunction' warning in a Polestar 1 is a critical alert that indicates an issue within the complex plug-in hybrid powertrain. Given that it's also affecting charging and performance, it's imperative to address this promptly.

  1. Potential Causes:

    • 12V Battery Issue: Ironically, a weak or failing 12V auxiliary battery can cause a cascade of electronic system failures, including hybrid system warnings, as it powers many control modules.
    • Charging System Fault: Issues with the onboard charger, charging port, or high-voltage cabling can prevent charging and trigger warnings.
    • High-Voltage Battery Fault: A problem with the main traction battery pack itself, such as a cell imbalance or internal fault.
    • Inverter/Converter Issue: Components that manage power flow between the battery, electric motors, and combustion engine.
    • Software Glitch: Less likely for a persistent critical warning, but a software error in the hybrid control module could theoretically occur.
    • Sensor Malfunction: A faulty sensor providing incorrect data to the hybrid system.
  2. Initial Steps (Limited):

    • Check 12V Battery: While you can't easily check it yourself, this is a common culprit. If you have a voltmeter, you could try checking the terminals if accessible.
    • Review Owner's Manual: Consult your owner's manual for specific instructions regarding this warning light.
    • Avoid Driving (If Severe): If the car's performance is significantly degraded or you feel unsafe, it's best to avoid driving to prevent further damage or safety risks.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately. A 'Hybrid System Malfunction' warning, especially when combined with charging failure and performance issues, requires professional diagnosis.
    • Diagnostic Scan: A Polestar service center will use specialized diagnostic tools to read fault codes from the hybrid control module. Common OBD-II codes for hybrid system issues can include ranges like P0Axx (e.g., P0A0F - Engine Not Starting, P0A1F - Battery Energy Control Module Performance) or manufacturer-specific codes related to the high-voltage system.
    • Safety Concern: High-voltage systems carry inherent risks. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage components yourself. A trained technician with proper safety equipment is required. Schedule an appointment with your nearest Polestar Space for a thorough inspection and repair.
