Vehicle: 2021 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

My 2021 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor just threw a Check Engine Light this morning. I pulled out my OBD-II scanner, and it's showing code P0D2A: High Voltage Battery Charger Fault. The car seems to drive okay, but I'm worried about charging it or doing any long trips.

Has anyone else experienced this specific code or a similar charging system issue on their Polestar 2? What was the fix? I've tried restarting the car a few times, but the light stays on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I book a service appointment.

Diagnosing a P0D2A code on your 2021 Polestar 2 requires a systematic approach, as it points to an issue within the high-voltage battery charging system. This is a critical system for your EV's operation.

  1. Understand P0D2A: This code specifically indicates a fault with the onboard charger (OBC) or its associated circuits. The OBC is responsible for converting AC power from your home or public charging station into DC power to charge the high-voltage battery.

  2. Potential Causes:

    • Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: The most direct cause. Internal component failure within the OBC itself.
    • Wiring or Connector Issues: Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring/connectors between the charging port, OBC, and high-voltage battery.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS monitors and controls the charging process. A fault here could incorrectly report an OBC issue or genuinely interfere with its operation.
    • Software Glitch: Less common, but a software error could trigger false positives. A system reset might clear temporary glitches, but if the light returns, it's likely hardware related.
    • External Charging Equipment: While less likely to trigger an internal car code, a faulty charging cable or station could sometimes contribute to charging system stress, though P0D2A usually points to the car's internal components.
  3. Initial Steps You Can Take:

    • Inspect Charging Port: Visually check the charging port for any debris, damage, or corrosion.
    • Try Different Charger/Cable: If possible, attempt to charge using a different Level 2 charger or cable to rule out external equipment issues.
    • Check 12V Battery: Though less direct, a weak 12V auxiliary battery can sometimes cause various electrical gremlins in EVs. Ensure it's in good health.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Action: Given this code relates to the high-voltage system, it's highly recommended to schedule service with a Polestar authorized technician as soon as possible. Driving with a compromised charging system could lead to further damage or leave you stranded.
    • Specialized Diagnostics: Polestar service centers have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact component failure within the high-voltage system, which generic OBD-II scanners cannot do.
    • Safety: Do not attempt to repair high-voltage components yourself. These systems carry dangerous voltage levels and require trained professionals for safe servicing.
