Vehicle: 2021 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone, I've been having some frustrating issues with charging my 2021 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. Lately, when I plug it into my Level 2 charger at home, it either charges incredibly slowly (like 3-4 kW instead of the usual 11 kW) or sometimes doesn't even initiate charging at all.

I've tried restarting the car, unplugging and replugging the charger, but it's hit or miss. It's really making home charging unreliable, and I'm worried about being stuck without enough range for my commute.

Has anyone else experienced this, especially after a recent software update? Could it be a car issue, or maybe something with my charging station? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common, albeit frustrating, issue that many EV owners encounter. Charging problems can stem from various sources, but here are some steps and potential causes to investigate for your 2021 Polestar 2:

  1. Check Your Charging Equipment:

    • EVSE Functionality: First, try charging at a different Level 2 public charger or a friend's charger to rule out your home EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) as the source of the problem. If it charges normally elsewhere, your home charger might be faulty.
    • Cable Inspection: Carefully inspect your charging cable for any visible damage, kinks, or corrosion on the connectors. A damaged cable can lead to slow charging or communication failures.
  2. Vehicle Settings and Software Reboot:

    • Charging Schedules/Limits: Double-check your Polestar 2's infotainment system and the Polestar app for any active charging schedules, current limits, or preferred charging times that might be interfering.
    • Infotainment Reboot: A soft reboot of the infotainment system can often clear temporary software glitches. In the Polestar 2, you can usually do this by holding down the home button (the one below the screen) for about 20 seconds until the screen goes black and then restarts.
  3. 12V Battery Health:

    • While your Polestar 2 has a large high-voltage battery, it also relies on a conventional 12V auxiliary battery for starting up critical systems, including the contactors that enable high-voltage charging. A weak or failing 12V battery can cause intermittent charging initiation problems. This is a less obvious but common culprit in EVs.
  4. Software Updates:

    • Ensure your Polestar 2 has the latest software updates installed. Polestar frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) updates that address bugs, improve charging performance, and enhance battery management.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If the issue persists after these steps, it's time to schedule a service appointment with a Polestar service center. Your vehicle may be logging specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the charging system. While specific codes like P0AA6 (Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) are more severe, simpler codes indicating a charging system malfunction (e.g., related to the On-Board Charger or Battery Management System) might be present.
    • A technician can use specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause, which could range from an internal component fault (like the On-Board Charger itself) to a communication module issue between the car and the EVSE.
