Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. A few times now, if I leave the car parked for more than 2-3 days, the 12V battery completely drains, and the car is totally dead. No lights, no response from the key fob, nothing. I've had to jump-start it twice already.

It's incredibly inconvenient, especially for an EV. I thought these cars were supposed to be reliable. Is this a known issue with the 2022 models? I'm running the latest software update (P2.9).

Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? What was the fix? I'm worried about getting stranded.

It's certainly frustrating when your EV, especially a relatively new one like your 2022 Polestar 2, experiences 12V battery issues. While the main high-voltage battery powers the drivetrain, the 12V battery is crucial for starting the car's systems, powering accessories, and waking up the high-voltage battery. A drained 12V battery will indeed leave your car completely unresponsive.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Common Causes for 12V Drain in EVs:

    • Software Glitches: This is a very common culprit. Certain software versions can prevent modules from properly 'sleeping' when the car is off, leading to a constant parasitic draw on the 12V battery. Even with P2.9, specific background processes might be at fault.
    • Faulty 12V Battery: While less common in newer vehicles, a defective 12V battery that can't hold a charge is possible. This can be tested by a technician.
    • Parasitic Drain: An electrical component (either factory or aftermarket) could be drawing power when it shouldn't be. This requires specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint.
    • Infrequent Use: If the car sits for extended periods without being driven or charged, the 12V battery might not get sufficient top-ups from the DC-DC converter.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps You Can Take:

    • Check Battery Terminals: Ensure the 12V battery terminals are clean and securely fastened. Loose or corroded connections can impede charging or power delivery.
    • Monitor for Software Updates: Polestar frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) updates. Keep an eye out for any new versions, as these often include fixes for battery management and sleep issues.
    • Consider a Trickle Charger: If your car sits for several days regularly, connecting a smart 12V trickle charger (designed for AGM batteries, if applicable) can help maintain the battery's health.
    • Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While a dead battery might not log specific codes for the cause of the drain, a service center can often find codes related to low voltage (e.g., P0562 - System Voltage Low) or specific module communication errors that might point to the issue.
  3. When to See a Polestar Service Center:

    • Recurring Issue: If the problem persists after checking basic connections and ensuring you're on the latest software, it's time for professional diagnosis.
    • No Obvious Cause: A service center has specialized equipment to perform a parasitic draw test, which measures current draw when the car is 'asleep' to identify the faulty component or module.
    • Battery Health Check: They can test the health and capacity of your 12V battery to rule out a defect.
    • Known TSBs: Polestar has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) in the past related to 12V battery management and software updates for various model years. Your service center will be aware of any relevant TSBs for your 2022 model that might address this specific issue.
