Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing some frustrating issues with charging my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. Lately, when I plug it in, especially at public DC fast chargers, the charging speed is significantly slower than what I've seen before. It often hovers around 50-70 kW even when the station is capable of much higher speeds and the battery is at a low state of charge.

To make matters worse, sometimes the charging session stops completely after 10-15 minutes without any clear error message on the car's display or the charger itself. I then have to unplug and replug to restart, only for it to potentially happen again. I've tried different chargers, both AC and DC, and the problem seems to persist across various locations.

Is this a known issue for the 2022 models? Could it be a software glitch that needs an update, or something more serious with the battery management system or onboard charger? I'm concerned about the reliability of charging, especially on longer trips. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common and frustrating issue for EV owners. Intermittent or slow charging on your 2022 Polestar 2 can stem from several sources. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

Potential Causes:

  1. Software Glitches: Polestar vehicles, like many modern EVs, are heavily reliant on software. An outdated or corrupted software version can interfere with charging protocols, leading to reduced speeds or unexpected stops. Polestar frequently releases Over-The-Air (OTA) updates that address such issues.
  2. Battery Management System (BMS) Issues: The BMS is crucial for monitoring battery health, temperature, and charging parameters. A fault within the BMS could cause the system to limit charging speed or stop it entirely to protect the battery from potential damage.
  3. Thermal Management System: If the battery or other high-voltage components (like the onboard charger) are overheating, the vehicle's system will automatically reduce charging speed or halt it to prevent damage. This is more common during repeated fast charging or in hot weather.
  4. Charging Port/Cable Fault: While less likely if it happens across multiple chargers, a faulty charging port on your vehicle or an internal issue with the charging cable (if using your own) could cause communication errors or resistance, leading to charging problems.
  5. Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: The OBC converts AC power from Level 1/2 chargers into DC power for the battery. A fault here could affect AC charging, and sometimes impact DC fast charging communication.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Software Updates: Ensure your Polestar 2 is running the absolute latest software version. Navigate to the 'Settings' menu on your infotainment screen to check for available updates. Many charging-related bugs are resolved through these updates.
  2. Perform a Soft Reset: A soft reset of the infotainment system can sometimes clear temporary glitches. Hold down the home button (the physical button below the screen) for about 20 seconds until the screen goes black and restarts.
  3. Document the Issue: Keep a detailed log of when the problem occurs. Note the specific charger (location, type), ambient temperature, battery percentage at start and stop, and any messages displayed on the car or charger. This information is invaluable for technicians.
  4. Try a Different Charging Cable: If you primarily use one cable for AC charging, try a different one to rule out a cable fault.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after ensuring your software is up to date and performing a soft reset.
  • If you notice any warning lights on your dashboard related to the battery, charging system, or powertrain.
  • If charging consistently fails or is severely degraded, as this could indicate a more serious hardware fault with the onboard charger, battery management system, or the battery itself.

Polestar service centers have specialized diagnostic tools that can read manufacturer-specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the high-voltage system, which standard OBD-II readers cannot access. They can perform deeper diagnostics to pinpoint the exact cause of the charging anomaly.
