Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

My 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor just threw a Check Engine Light this morning. I scanned it with my OBD-II reader, and it's showing a P0420 code: 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)'.

The car feels a bit sluggish, especially during acceleration, and I'm worried about potential damage. Has anyone experienced this with their Polestar 2? What was the fix?

I'm in the US, and I know these cars are mostly electric, but the P0420 points to the exhaust system. Any advice before I take it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0420 code on your 2022 Polestar 2 indicates that the catalytic converter's efficiency is below the required threshold. While Polestar 2 is primarily electric, it still has a catalytic converter as part of its exhaust system, primarily for the range extender or to meet emissions standards even with its hybrid components. This code is common across many vehicle types and points to an issue with the exhaust aftertreatment system.

Here are the common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Oxygen Sensor Issues: The most frequent culprits are faulty upstream or downstream oxygen (O2) sensors. These sensors monitor the exhaust gas composition. If they send incorrect data, the car's computer (ECU) might wrongly assume the catalytic converter is inefficient.
  2. Exhaust Leaks: A leak in the exhaust system before or after the catalytic converter can cause the O2 sensors to read incorrectly, leading to a P0420 code. Check for any audible hissing or exhaust smell.
  3. Failing Catalytic Converter: Over time, catalytic converters can degrade. This is less common on newer vehicles like your 2022 model but can happen due to fuel contamination, engine misfires, or excessive oil consumption.
  4. Engine Misfires or Fuel System Problems: Issues like spark plug problems, faulty fuel injectors, or incorrect air-fuel mixture can send unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, causing it to overheat and fail prematurely.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediate Action: Since you're experiencing reduced performance, it's advisable to have it professionally diagnosed soon. Driving with a failing catalytic converter can lead to further engine damage or increased emissions.
  • Specialized Diagnosis: A Polestar service center or a shop with experience in EVs/PHEVs will have advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause. They can perform live data readings of the O2 sensors and inspect the catalytic converter's health.
  • Warranty: Your 2022 Polestar 2 is likely still under warranty. Check your warranty details, as catalytic converter issues or related sensor failures might be covered.
