Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a really concerning issue with my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. A couple of times now, while driving normally (not even pushing it hard), I've had a sudden and significant reduction in power. It feels like the car just cuts back almost completely, and a 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning pops up on the driver display.

It's happened twice in the last week. The first time, I pulled over, turned the car off and on, and it seemed to reset, allowing me to drive home without further incident. However, it just happened again this morning. There's no strange noise or vibration leading up to it, just an abrupt power cut.

Has anyone else with a Polestar 2 experienced something similar? I'm worried this is more than just a software glitch. Any ideas on what might be causing this or what I should check before taking it to the service center? Thanks for any help!

Hi Sarah,

Experiencing sudden power loss and a 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning in your 2022 Polestar 2 is definitely a serious concern that warrants immediate attention. This isn't a typical software glitch and could indicate a problem with the high-voltage system or electric drivetrain components.

Here's what could be happening and what you should do:

  1. Possible Causes:

    • Inverter/Motor Control Unit Failure: These units manage power flow to the electric motors. A fault here can lead to reduced power or complete shutdown.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Issue: The BMS monitors the high-voltage battery. If it detects an anomaly (e.g., cell imbalance, overheating, or a contactor issue), it can limit power to protect the system.
    • Electric Motor Sensor Fault: A sensor providing incorrect data to the motor control unit could cause it to incorrectly limit power.
    • High-Voltage Cable or Connector Problem: Loose or damaged high-voltage connections can interrupt power delivery.
    • Software Glitch with Safety Protocol: While less likely to cause repeated, severe power loss, a software bug could trigger a safety mode prematurely.
  2. Diagnostics & OBD Codes:

    • When the 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning appears, the vehicle's onboard diagnostics system will likely store specific trouble codes. While generic OBD-II scanners might pull some basic powertrain codes (e.g., in the P0Axx range, which are specific to hybrid/EV systems like P0A0E for Drive Motor 'A' Control Module), a Polestar-specific diagnostic tool will be needed to pinpoint the exact issue.
    • Pay attention to any other messages that might appear on the display, as these can provide further clues.
  3. Immediate Steps (if it happens again):

    • Safely Pull Over: As you've done, find a safe place to stop the vehicle immediately.
    • Turn Off and Wait: Turn the car completely off, open the door (to ensure all systems power down), and wait for a few minutes before restarting. This can sometimes reset temporary faults.
    • Do Not Ignore: If the warning persists or the power loss is severe, do not continue driving.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Given the repeated nature and severity of the power loss, you should contact Polestar Roadside Assistance or schedule a service appointment with your nearest Polestar Service Center immediately. This is not an issue you should try to diagnose or fix yourself, as it involves the high-voltage system.
    • Driving with a recurring drivetrain malfunction can be unsafe and could potentially lead to further, more costly damage to critical components.

Provide the service center with as much detail as possible about when and how the issue occurs. They have the specialized tools and training to safely diagnose and repair high-voltage system faults.
