Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out. My 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor just threw a 'Service Required' message on the dashboard. It also feels like it's in reduced power mode, acceleration is definitely limited.

I haven't had any warning lights before this. I tried restarting the car a couple of times, but the message persists. I don't have an OBD-II scanner that can read EV-specific codes, so I'm a bit stuck.

Has anyone experienced this with their Polestar 2? What was the cause? Is this something I can troubleshoot myself, or does it definitely need a dealer visit? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The 'Service Required' message combined with reduced power in your 2022 Polestar 2 is a critical warning that indicates a significant issue within the vehicle's powertrain or high-voltage system. While it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause without diagnostic codes, here are common possibilities and steps you can take:

  1. Check the 12V Battery: Even in EVs, the 12V battery powers critical control modules. A weak or failing 12V battery can cause a cascade of seemingly unrelated errors, including 'Service Required' messages and reduced power modes.

    • Action: If you have a multimeter, check the 12V battery voltage. It should be around 12.6V when off. If it's significantly lower, it might need charging or replacement.
  2. Look for OBD-II Codes (EV-Specific): Standard OBD-II scanners might not read all proprietary EV codes. However, some advanced scanners or those specifically designed for EVs can provide more insight.

    • Action: If possible, get your vehicle scanned. Common codes related to reduced power in EVs might include:
      • P0A00-P0A99 range: High Voltage System codes.
      • P0C00-P0C99 range: Drive Motor Inverter/Control Module codes.
      • Specific manufacturer codes: Polestar will have its own set of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that a dealer-level tool can read.
  3. Software Glitch/Reset: Sometimes, a temporary software anomaly can trigger these warnings.

    • Action: While not always effective for critical faults, a full system reset (often involving locking the car, waiting, or disconnecting the 12V battery for a short period if you're comfortable and know the procedure) can sometimes clear transient errors. Consult your owner's manual or Polestar support for safe reset procedures.

Common Causes for 'Service Required' and Reduced Power in EVs:

  • High-Voltage Battery System Fault: Issues with battery cells, battery management system (BMS), or temperature sensors.
  • Inverter or Motor Control Unit Failure: These components are crucial for converting DC power from the battery to AC power for the motors.
  • Charging System Issues: Problems with the onboard charger or DC-DC converter.
  • Sensor Malfunctions: Faulty sensors providing incorrect data to the vehicle's control modules.

When to See a Shop:

You should schedule an immediate service appointment with a Polestar authorized service center.

  • Safety: Reduced power mode can be unsafe, especially if it occurs unexpectedly or limits your ability to accelerate in traffic.
  • Complexity: High-voltage systems require specialized training and tools for diagnosis and repair. Attempting to diagnose or repair these systems yourself without proper knowledge can be extremely dangerous.
  • Warranty: Your 2022 Polestar 2 is likely still under warranty, and any repairs related to these critical systems should be covered.

Do not ignore this warning. Driving with a 'Service Required' message and reduced power can potentially lead to further damage or leave you stranded.
