Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on an issue I just experienced with my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. I was driving on the highway this morning, nothing unusual, when suddenly I got a 'Drivetrain System Malfunction' warning on the dash. Immediately, the car went into what felt like a limp mode, with significantly reduced power.

I managed to safely pull over and restart the car, but the warning light stayed on, and the power reduction was still noticeable. It's definitely not driving normally. I'm worried about what this could be, especially since it happened so abruptly.

Has anyone else with a Polestar 2, especially a 2022 model, encountered this? What was the cause, and how was it resolved? Any advice on what I should check before taking it to the service center would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like your 2022 Polestar 2 is experiencing a significant drivetrain fault, which is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. The 'limp mode' and 'Drivetrain System Malfunction' warning indicate that the vehicle's onboard diagnostics have detected a critical problem within the electric propulsion system.

Here's what could be happening and what you should do:

  1. Possible Causes:

    • Inverter Malfunction: The inverter is crucial for converting DC power from the battery to AC power for the electric motors. A fault here can severely impact power delivery.
    • Electric Motor Issue: Problems with one of the electric motors (bearings, windings, or sensors) can trigger this warning.
    • High-Voltage Battery System Fault: While less common for sudden power loss without prior warnings, an issue with the battery management system or a high-voltage contactor could cause this.
    • Sensor Failure: A critical sensor within the drivetrain (e.g., motor speed sensor, temperature sensor) could be providing incorrect data, leading the system to limit power as a protective measure.
  2. Common OBD Codes (if accessible):

    • P0A03: Drive Motor 'A' Control Module Power Circuit Malfunction
    • P0A1F: Drive Motor 'A' Inverter Performance
    • P0A7A: Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Sense 'A' Circuit High
    • P0A80: Replace Hybrid Battery Pack (less likely for sudden onset, but possible)
  3. What to Do:

    • Do Not Ignore: This is not a warning to be taken lightly. Continuing to drive with a drivetrain malfunction can exacerbate the problem or lead to a complete breakdown.
    • Contact Polestar Service: Your Polestar 2 is still relatively new, and this issue is likely covered under warranty. Contact Polestar Roadside Assistance or your nearest Polestar Space immediately. They have specialized diagnostic tools and trained technicians to safely identify and repair high-voltage system faults.
    • Avoid Further Driving: If the car is still in limp mode, it's best to avoid driving it further than absolutely necessary. Arrange for it to be towed to the service center.

When you speak with the service center, describe the exact symptoms, including the warning message, the suddenness of the power loss, and any sounds or smells you might have noticed. This information will help them diagnose the issue more efficiently.
