Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit concerned about my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. Over the past few weeks, I've noticed a significant drop in my estimated range, even when fully charged. It used to consistently show around 260 miles, but now it's closer to 220-230 miles, sometimes even less, after a full charge. This is happening without any major changes in my driving habits or the weather.

On top of that, I've experienced slower charging speeds at both public DC fast chargers and my home Level 2 charger. It seems to take much longer to reach a full charge, and the power delivery feels inconsistent. I've tried different charging stations, but the issue persists.

Has anyone else with a 2022 Polestar 2 experienced similar problems? I'm wondering if this is a known software bug, a battery health issue, or something else entirely. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing a sudden drop in range and slower charging speeds with your 2022 Polestar 2 can be frustrating, but there are several common causes and troubleshooting steps to consider before heading to a service center.

Potential Causes:

  1. Software Glitches: Polestar vehicles, like many modern EVs, rely heavily on software. A minor bug or an incomplete update can sometimes affect battery management system (BMS) calculations, leading to inaccurate range estimates or suboptimal charging performance.
  2. Environmental Factors: While you mentioned no major weather changes, extreme cold or heat can significantly impact battery efficiency and charging speeds. Batteries perform best within a moderate temperature range.
  3. Battery Degradation (Less Likely for a 2022 Model): While possible, significant battery degradation in a relatively new 2022 model is less common unless there's been unusual stress or a manufacturing defect.
  4. Charging Infrastructure Issues: Although you've tried different chargers, sometimes the issue can be with the charger itself or the grid's power delivery, especially at public stations.
  5. Driving Style: Aggressive acceleration, high speeds, and frequent braking can consume more energy, leading to lower real-world range, even if the estimated range is initially high.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Software Reboot: Try a soft reboot of your infotainment system (hold the home button for 20 seconds) and, if that doesn't help, a full system reboot (refer to your owner's manual for the exact procedure, often involving holding down both steering wheel buttons).
  2. Check for Updates: Ensure your Polestar 2's software is fully up to date. Check the Polestar app or the vehicle's settings for any pending over-the-air (OTA) updates.
  3. Monitor Charging Data: Use the Polestar app to monitor charging sessions. Note the actual power delivery (kW) and compare it to the expected rates for your charger type.
  4. Try a Different Home Charger/Circuit: If you have access, try charging at a different Level 2 charger or ensure your home circuit isn't overloaded.
  5. Review Driving Habits: Briefly adjust your driving style to be more conservative and see if the estimated range improves over a few cycles.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after trying these steps, or if you receive any specific error messages or warnings on your vehicle's display related to the battery or charging system, it's time to schedule an appointment with a Polestar service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check the battery's health, BMS, and charging components for any underlying hardware or more complex software issues. Mention any specific diagnostic messages or unusual sounds you've observed.
