Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having a major problem with my 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor. For the past two days, it completely refuses to charge. Whether I try my home Level 2 charger or a public DC fast charger, I get a 'Charging Error' message on the dashboard, and the charging process just won't initiate.

I've tried different cables, rebooted the car (the classic 'turn it off and on again'), and checked my home circuit, but nothing seems to work. The charging port looks clean, no visible damage. This is a huge inconvenience, as I rely on my EV daily.

Has anyone else experienced a complete charging lockout like this on their Polestar 2? What was the underlying issue? Could it be the car's charging port itself or something more serious?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A complete inability to charge, both at home and public stations, on your 2023 Polestar 2 points to an issue with the vehicle's onboard charging system or the charging port itself. This is a critical diagnostic problem for an EV owner.

Here are the most common causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Charging Port Latch/Sensor: The charging port has a latch mechanism and sensors to ensure the cable is properly inserted and locked. If this latch is stuck, damaged, or its sensor is faulty, the car might not recognize a secure connection and refuse to charge.
  2. Debris in Charging Port: Even if it looks clean, sometimes small debris, dust, or moisture can interfere with the pins inside the charging port, preventing proper communication between the car and the charger. Use compressed air to gently clear it out.
  3. Onboard Charger (OBC) Failure: The OBC is responsible for converting AC power from your home charger into DC power for the battery. A fault in the OBC would prevent Level 1/2 charging. For DC fast charging, the car communicates directly with the DC charger, but a fault in the car's high-voltage charging control unit could still prevent it.
  4. Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS monitors the battery's health and safety. If it detects a critical error, it can inhibit charging to protect the battery.
  5. Software Glitch: Less common for a complete lockout, but a software error in the charging control module could cause this. A full system reset (beyond a simple reboot) might be attempted by a service center.

When to see a shop:

  • Urgent Service: Since you cannot charge at all, this requires immediate professional attention. You'll need to arrange for a tow to a Polestar service center.
  • Specialized Diagnostics: Polestar technicians have specific diagnostic tools to read fault codes from the charging system, OBC, and BMS. They can perform detailed tests on the charging port and internal components.
  • Warranty: Your 2023 Polestar 2 is under warranty, so this issue should be covered. Provide them with details of your troubleshooting steps and the exact error messages you're seeing.
