Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. This morning, when I started the car, the main infotainment screen was completely black. No Polestar logo, no Google services, nothing. It's totally unresponsive to touch, and the steering wheel controls for media aren't working either.

I've tried the usual soft reset by holding down the home button for about 20 seconds, but it didn't do anything. The screen just stayed black. All other functions seem to be working, like driving and climate control, but without the screen, navigation and music are a no-go.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? Is there another reset method I should try, or could this be a more serious electrical problem? I'm hoping it's just a software glitch that can be easily fixed.

It sounds like you're dealing with a common, albeit frustrating, infotainment system glitch in your Polestar 2. Given that the screen is completely black and unresponsive, it's likely a software hang or a temporary communication issue with the display module. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset (if soft reset failed): While you mentioned trying a soft reset, sometimes a more prolonged hold or a specific sequence is needed. Try holding the home button (the physical button below the screen) for at least 30-45 seconds, even if nothing appears to happen initially. This can sometimes force a deeper system reboot.
  2. Check 12V Battery Health: Although less common for a completely black screen (usually leads to more widespread issues), a weak or failing 12V battery can cause various electrical anomalies, including infotainment system malfunctions. If you have access to a multimeter, you could check the battery voltage. A healthy 12V battery should read around 12.6V when the car is off.
  3. Check for Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates: If the system was in the middle of an update or an update failed, it could cause this issue. Since your screen is black, you can't manually check. However, sometimes simply leaving the car locked and undisturbed for a few hours can allow background processes to complete or reset.
  4. Look for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While you might not have an OBD-II scanner that can read Polestar's specific modules, a generic scanner might pick up communication errors. Common codes related to infotainment or communication issues could include U0100 (Lost Communication with ECM/PCM 'A'), U0140 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module), or U0253 (Lost Communication With Infotainment Control Module). These would indicate a deeper communication problem.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the hard reset doesn't resolve the issue after multiple attempts.
  • If the screen remains black and unresponsive for more than 24 hours.
  • If you notice other electrical components or systems starting to malfunction.
  • If you've checked the 12V battery and it appears healthy, ruling out a simple power issue.

Your Polestar service center has specialized diagnostic tools that can communicate directly with the infotainment control module and perform a more thorough system reset or reflash the software if necessary. They can also check for any underlying hardware failures that might be causing the problem.
