Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I recently had my 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor in for its routine 1-year/10,000-mile service at an independent shop that specializes in EVs (they're certified for Polestar maintenance, just not a dealer). They performed all the necessary checks and fluid top-offs, but now I can't get the 'Service Required' message to clear from my dashboard.

I've tried looking through the infotainment system for a reset option, but I can't find anything obvious. Is there a specific procedure or a tool required to reset this service reminder on the Polestar 2? I'm hoping I don't have to take it back to the dealer just for this, especially since the actual maintenance is done.

Any tips or tricks from other owners or technicians would be greatly appreciated! It's annoying to see that warning all the time.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's a common scenario for a 'Service Required' message to persist after maintenance, especially if the service was performed outside of a Polestar dealership. Many modern vehicles, including the Polestar 2, require a specific procedure or diagnostic tool to reset these service reminders.

  1. Understanding the Service Reminder System:

    • The Polestar 2's service reminder is integrated into its vehicle software and is not typically a simple manual reset via the infotainment screen like some older cars. It's designed to be reset by a system that can communicate with the car's onboard computers.
    • The message is triggered by either mileage or time intervals, or sometimes specific sensor readings if a fault is detected (though in your case, it's likely just the routine reminder).
  2. Reset Procedures & Tools:

    • Polestar Diagnostic Tool (VIDA/Polestar Diagnostic Application): The most reliable way to reset the service reminder is using Polestar's proprietary diagnostic software, often referred to as VIDA (for Volvo/Polestar vehicles) or a specific Polestar Diagnostic Application. Independent shops that are truly 'certified' for Polestar maintenance should have access to this or an equivalent high-level diagnostic scanner.
    • Advanced OBD-II Scanners: Some advanced aftermarket OBD-II scanners or specialized service tools can perform service resets on Polestar vehicles. These are not generic code readers but professional-grade tools with specific service functions. Your independent shop should possess such a tool if they claim full Polestar service capability.
    • Manual Reset (Rare/Limited): Unlike some older Volvo models, there is no widely known or officially supported manual button-press sequence to reset the service reminder on the Polestar 2 via the steering wheel or dashboard controls. Attempts to find one usually lead to frustration.
  3. When to See a Shop (Again):

    • Revisit Your Shop: Your first step should be to contact the independent shop that performed the service. They should be able to reset this reminder for you as part of their service. If they are truly certified, they will have the necessary tools and knowledge.
    • Polestar Service Center: If the independent shop is unable to reset it, or if you prefer, a Polestar service center can easily clear the message using their specialized diagnostic equipment. While it's an inconvenience, it's a quick procedure for them.
    • No Driving Risk: The persistent 'Service Required' message does not indicate a current fault or pose a driving risk if the maintenance was indeed completed correctly. It's purely a reminder. However, it's best to have it cleared so you can be alerted to future, genuine service needs.
