Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on an issue I'm having with my 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor. Yesterday, while driving, I suddenly got a 'Propulsion System Malfunction' warning on the driver display. Immediately after, the car went into a reduced power mode, and acceleration was severely limited.

I managed to get home, but I'm hesitant to drive it again. The warning light is still present. I don't have an advanced OBD-II scanner for EVs, just a basic one that didn't pull any generic codes.

Has anyone experienced this with their Polestar 2? What could be causing this, and is there anything I can check before taking it to the service center? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Sarah,

A 'Propulsion System Malfunction' warning combined with reduced power in your 2023 Polestar 2 is a serious indication that requires prompt attention. This typically points to an issue within the high-voltage powertrain system.

Here's what you should know and do:

  1. Potential Causes:

    • High-Voltage Battery System Fault: Issues with the battery management system (BMS), individual battery cells, or the overall high-voltage battery pack.
      • Inverter or Motor Controller Malfunction: These components are crucial for converting DC power from the battery to AC power for the electric motor(s) and controlling motor speed.
      • Electric Motor Issue: While less common, a fault within one of the electric motors could trigger this warning.
      • Critical Sensor Failure: Sensors monitoring temperature, voltage, or current within the propulsion system can fail, sending incorrect data and triggering a fault.
      • 12V Battery System: Although it's an EV, the 12V battery powers critical control modules. A weak or failing 12V battery can cause a cascade of seemingly unrelated electrical faults, including propulsion warnings.
  2. Initial Checks (Limited Scope):

    • 12V Battery Terminals: While unlikely to be the primary cause for a 'Propulsion System Malfunction' directly, ensure your 12V battery terminals are clean and securely fastened. A loose connection can sometimes cause erratic electrical behavior.
      • Infotainment Restart: Occasionally, software glitches can trigger warnings. Try restarting the infotainment system (hold the home button for 20 seconds) to see if the warning clears, though this is a long shot for a propulsion fault.
  3. OBD-II Codes:

    • Generic OBD-II scanners often have limited access to Polestar's proprietary diagnostic codes, especially for high-voltage systems. While your basic scanner might not show anything, a more advanced EV-specific scanner or the diagnostic tools at a Polestar service center would reveal specific fault codes (e.g., P0Axx series for EV powertrain issues, or manufacturer-specific codes) that pinpoint the exact problem.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately. A 'Propulsion System Malfunction' warning, especially when accompanied by reduced power, indicates a critical issue. Driving the vehicle in this state is not recommended as it could potentially worsen the problem, lead to further damage, or compromise safety. High-voltage systems require specialized training and equipment for diagnosis and repair.

Recommendation: Contact Polestar Roadside Assistance or your nearest Polestar service center immediately to arrange for diagnosis and repair. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle further than absolutely necessary.
