Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone here might have some insight. My 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor recently threw a "Reduced Propulsion Power" warning message on the main display, along with the dreaded check engine light. This happened completely out of the blue while I was driving on the highway.

The car still drives, but it feels significantly less powerful, almost like it's in a limp mode. I've tried restarting the car multiple times, but the warning and light persist. I don't have an OBD-II scanner that's compatible with EVs, so I can't pull any specific codes myself.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? What was the cause, and what was the fix? I'm trying to figure out if this is something minor or a major issue before I take it to the service center. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Experiencing a "Reduced Propulsion Power" warning along with a Check Engine Light in your 2023 Polestar 2 is a serious indication that the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a significant issue. While you can't pull codes directly, this symptom typically points to problems within the high-voltage (HV) system or the electric drivetrain.

Here are the common causes and recommended steps:

  1. Likely Causes:

    • HV Battery System Fault: Issues with battery cell balance, temperature management, or the Battery Management System (BMS) itself. This can trigger a protective limp mode to prevent further damage.
    • Inverter/Motor Control Unit (MCU) Malfunction: The inverter converts DC power from the battery to AC power for the motors. A fault here can directly impact propulsion.
    • Electric Motor Issue: While less common, a fault within one of the electric motors could lead to reduced power.
    • High-Voltage Cable or Connector Problem: Loose or corroded connections in the HV system.
    • Software Glitch: In rare cases, a software anomaly could trigger false warnings, though usually, a restart would clear these.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately. Given the nature of a "Reduced Propulsion Power" warning in an EV, especially one under warranty, it is crucial to have it professionally diagnosed. Continuing to drive with this warning could potentially exacerbate the issue or lead to a complete breakdown.
  3. Recommended Steps:

    • 1. Do Not Attempt DIY Repairs: High-voltage EV systems are extremely dangerous. Only certified technicians should work on these components.
    • 2. Contact Polestar Service: Reach out to your nearest Polestar service center or roadside assistance immediately. Explain the warning messages and symptoms clearly.
    • 3. Prepare for Diagnosis: The service center will use specialized diagnostic tools to read proprietary Polestar fault codes, which are more detailed than generic OBD-II codes. These tools can pinpoint the exact component or system that is malfunctioning.
    • 4. Warranty Coverage: Your 2023 Polestar 2 is well within its factory warranty period. This type of powertrain issue should be covered, so ensure you discuss warranty claims with the service center.

This is not an issue to ignore. Get your Polestar 2 to a qualified service center as soon as possible for a thorough and safe diagnosis.
