Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having a pretty concerning issue with my 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. While driving yesterday, I suddenly got a "Service Required" message pop up on the display, and almost immediately felt a noticeable reduction in power. The car felt sluggish and didn't accelerate like it normally does.

I pulled over, turned the car off and on again, but the message persisted, and the reduced power was still there. I have a basic OBD-II scanner, and when I plugged it in, it showed a U0111 code. I'm not super familiar with U-codes, especially for an EV.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? What exactly does U0111 mean in this context, and is it safe to drive the car to a service center like this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The U0111 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates "Lost Communication with Battery Energy Control Module 'A'." This is a critical communication fault within your Polestar 2's high-voltage system, specifically pointing to an issue where other control modules are unable to communicate with the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

Potential Causes:

  1. 12V Battery Issues: Surprisingly, a weak or failing 12V auxiliary battery is a common culprit for a wide range of seemingly unrelated electrical and communication faults in EVs, including Polestars. If the 12V battery isn't providing stable voltage, it can disrupt communication between modules.
  2. Wiring or Connector Problems: A loose, corroded, or damaged wire or connector in the CAN bus network that connects to the BECM can interrupt communication.
  3. BECM Fault: The Battery Energy Control Module itself could be faulty, preventing it from communicating with the rest of the vehicle's network.
  4. Software Glitch: Less common, but sometimes a temporary software glitch can cause communication errors.

What You Can Do:

  1. Check 12V Battery: While you might not have the tools to fully test it, visually inspect the 12V battery terminals for corrosion or looseness. If you have a multimeter, check its voltage (should be around 12.6V when off).
  2. Clear the Code (Temporarily): You can try clearing the U0111 code with your OBD-II scanner. If it's a temporary glitch, the code might not return immediately. However, if the underlying issue isn't resolved, it will likely reappear.
  3. Monitor: If the code clears and doesn't return, and power is restored, it might have been a transient issue. However, if it returns, or if the "Service Required" message and reduced power persist, further diagnosis is needed.

When to See a Shop:

Given the "Service Required" message and reduced propulsion power, it is not recommended to drive long distances or at high speeds with this condition. The reduced power is a safety mechanism. You should schedule an appointment with a Polestar service center as soon as possible. A qualified technician will have specialized diagnostic tools to:

  • Perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan to identify all active and pending codes.
  • Test the 12V battery and charging system thoroughly.
  • Inspect the wiring harness and connectors related to the BECM.
  • Diagnose the BECM itself for internal faults.
  • Update software if necessary.

Issues involving the high-voltage battery system should always be handled by trained professionals due to safety risks.
