Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor and I'm trying to stay on top of all the maintenance, even the less obvious stuff for an EV. I know EVs have fewer fluids to worry about, but brake fluid is definitely still a thing.

What's the recommended interval for a brake fluid flush on these cars? I've heard different things for different manufacturers, and I want to make sure I'm not neglecting it. Is it mileage-based, or time-based?

Also, for those who are handy, is this something that's reasonably DIY-friendly on a Polestar 2? Or are there special tools or procedures required because of the regenerative braking system or other EV-specific components? I've done brake fluid flushes on ICE cars before, but I'm cautious with the Polestar.

Any advice on the specific type of fluid to use would also be greatly appreciated!

Maintaining your brake fluid is crucial for safety and performance, even in an EV like your 2022 Polestar 2. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Recommended Interval: Polestar, like many manufacturers, typically recommends a brake fluid flush every two years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time. This moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point, which can lead to a spongy pedal feel and reduced braking efficiency, especially under heavy braking. It also promotes corrosion within the brake system.

  2. Fluid Type: Always refer to your Polestar 2's owner's manual for the exact specification. Most modern vehicles, including the Polestar 2, require DOT 4 brake fluid. Ensure you use a high-quality, fresh, sealed container of the specified fluid.

  3. DIY Feasibility: While technically possible for experienced DIYers, performing a brake fluid flush on a modern EV like the Polestar 2 can be more complex than on older ICE vehicles. Here's why:

    • Regenerative Braking System: The integration of regenerative braking means the hydraulic braking system isn't always engaged in the same way as a traditional car. This can affect how the system is bled.
    • ABS/ESC Systems: Modern vehicles have complex Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) modules. Proper bleeding often requires a diagnostic scan tool to cycle the ABS pump and open specific valves to ensure all old fluid is expelled and no air is trapped. Without this, you might not get a complete flush or could introduce air into the ABS module.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If you are not confident in your ability to perform the flush correctly, especially given the complexities of an EV's braking system.
    • If you don't have access to the necessary diagnostic tools to properly cycle the ABS pump.
    • If your brake fluid appears very dark or murky, indicating significant contamination.
    • If you notice any changes in brake pedal feel (e.g., spongy, low pedal) or braking performance.
    • A professional shop has the specialized equipment and knowledge to perform a thorough and safe brake fluid flush on your Polestar 2, ensuring optimal braking performance and longevity of your brake system components.
