Vehicle: 2024 Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I just took delivery of my new 2024 Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor a couple of weeks ago, and I've started hearing a noticeable clunking noise from the front suspension. It's most apparent when going over small bumps or uneven pavement at low speeds, like in a parking lot. It sounds almost like something is loose.

This is a brand new car, so I'm pretty concerned. Is this a known issue with the Polestar 3, or could it be a manufacturing defect? I've checked online for TSBs or recalls but haven't found anything specific yet. Has anyone else experienced this with their new Polestar 3, or any advice on what it might be?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Hearing a clunking noise from the suspension of a brand-new vehicle is definitely a cause for concern and should be investigated immediately. While the Polestar 3 is a relatively new model, suspension noises can arise from various sources.

  1. Common Causes of Suspension Clunking:

    • Loose or Worn Bushings: Rubber or polyurethane bushings in control arms, sway bar links, or shock mounts can wear prematurely or be improperly torqued from the factory, leading to play and noise.
    • Sway Bar Links/End Links: These components connect the sway bar to the suspension. If they are loose, worn, or defective, they can produce a clunking sound, especially over uneven surfaces.
    • Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the struts can fail or have issues, causing noise.
    • Loose Fasteners: Any suspension component that isn't properly tightened can cause noise. This is more common in new vehicles as part of initial assembly.
    • Defective Shock Absorber/Strut: While less common in a brand-new car, a defective strut or shock can sometimes produce internal noise.
  2. Why Immediate Inspection is Crucial for a New Car:

    • Safety: Suspension components are critical for vehicle control and safety. Any looseness or defect could compromise handling.
    • Warranty: Issues arising so soon after delivery are almost certainly covered under warranty, but delaying inspection could complicate claims.
    • Manufacturing Defect: It's possible there was an assembly error or a faulty part installed at the factory.
  3. Action Steps:

    • Do Not Delay: Contact your Polestar Space or authorized service center immediately to report the issue.
    • Describe Clearly: Provide a detailed description of the noise: when it occurs (speed, type of bump), where it seems to come from (front left/right), and its characteristics (dull thud, sharp clunk).
    • Schedule Inspection: Request a thorough inspection of the front suspension components. They should check all bushings, links, mounts, and fasteners for proper torque and condition.
    • Check for TSBs/Recalls: While you haven't found anything yet, the service center will have access to the latest Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and recall information specific to your VIN. Sometimes, TSBs are issued for common manufacturing nuances or minor defects that aren't safety recalls but address customer complaints. Your dealer is the best source for this information.
