Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a strange clunking or rattling noise coming from the front end of my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. It's most noticeable when I go over small bumps, speed bumps, or uneven pavement at low speeds. It sounds like something is loose.

I've checked for anything obvious like loose items in the frunk, but no luck. The car only has about 25,000 miles on it, and I wouldn't expect suspension issues this early. It's a bit concerning, especially with an EV where other noises are usually minimal.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? Any ideas what it could be or what I should check before taking it to the service center? Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a common complaint and can stem from several sources. Given your 2022 Polestar 2 has 25,000 miles, it's worth investigating promptly.

Here are the most common causes for such a noise:

  1. Worn Sway Bar End Links: These connect the sway bar to the suspension. Their bushings can wear out, leading to a metallic clunk or rattle, particularly over uneven surfaces. This is a very frequent culprit.
  2. Degraded Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. If their rubber bushings crack or wear, they can allow excessive movement and cause a clunking sound.
  3. Worn Strut Mounts or Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, or the bearing within it can fail, leading to noise when the suspension articulates or when turning the steering wheel.
  4. Loose or Worn Ball Joints: Ball joints allow the steering knuckle to pivot. If they become loose or worn, they can cause a clunking sound and affect steering precision.
  5. Loose Brake Caliper Components: While less common for a general suspension clunk, sometimes a loose caliper bolt or worn caliper guide pins can cause a rattle over bumps.

What you can do:

  • Visual Inspection: With the car safely parked on a level surface, visually inspect the suspension components around the front wheels. Look for any obvious signs of damage, cracked rubber bushings, or loose bolts on the sway bar end links, control arms, and strut mounts.
  • Bounce Test: Gently push down on each corner of the front of the car and release. Listen for any unusual noises as the suspension compresses and rebounds.

When to see a professional shop:

It's highly recommended to have a qualified technician inspect your Polestar 2. Suspension components are critical for safety and proper vehicle handling. A professional can:

  • Safely lift the vehicle to inspect components under load and without load.
  • Perform a thorough visual inspection for worn bushings, loose bolts, or damaged parts.
  • Check for play in ball joints, tie rod ends, and wheel bearings.
  • Conduct a road test to pinpoint the exact conditions under which the noise occurs.

Ignoring suspension noises can lead to accelerated wear on other components, compromised handling, and potentially unsafe driving conditions. Given the vehicle's age and mileage, it's best to address this soon.
