Vehicle: 2021 Polestar 2 Single Motor

My 2021 Polestar 2 Single Motor has been experiencing frequent infotainment system freezes. The screen will go black, sometimes reboot on its own, and Android Auto/Google Maps just stops responding. It's really frustrating, especially when I'm relying on navigation or music on a long drive.

I've tried doing a soft reset (holding the home button on the display), but the problem keeps coming back, sometimes within minutes. Is this a known issue with the Google Automotive OS in the Polestar 2, or could it be something specific to my vehicle? It wasn't doing this when I first got the car.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches like freezing and spontaneous reboots are common across many modern vehicles, and Polestar 2's Google Automotive OS can sometimes experience these too. These issues are typically software-related, but can occasionally point to hardware.

Common Causes:

  • Software Bugs: The most frequent culprit. Updates often address these.
  • Memory Overload: Too many apps running or background processes consuming resources.
  • Overheating: While rare, extreme conditions or prolonged heavy use could potentially cause the head unit to overheat and reboot.
  • Hardware Fault: Less common, but a failing component within the infotainment head unit could be the cause.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Full System Reset: A deeper reset than just holding the home button briefly. Hold the home button on the center display for approximately 20 seconds until the Polestar logo appears. This forces a more thorough restart of the system.
  2. Check for Software Updates (OTA): Go to Settings > System > Software updates to ensure your car is running the latest version. Polestar frequently releases updates that improve infotainment stability and performance.
  3. Clear App Cache: If the issue seems to occur when using specific apps, navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps, select the problematic app, and choose Storage & cache > Clear cache.
  4. Factory Data Reset (Last Resort): This will erase all personal data, settings, and downloaded apps, returning the infotainment system to its factory state. Back up any important data first. You can find this option in Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).

When to See a Shop: If persistent freezing and reboots continue after performing a full system reset, updating software, and especially after a factory data reset, it indicates a deeper issue. A Polestar service center can run advanced diagnostics, check for specific fault codes (though infotainment often doesn't throw standard OBD-II codes), and determine if a hardware replacement of the head unit is necessary. They can also perform a more thorough software re-installation or re-flash the system firmware.
