Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hello Polestar community,

I just installed the latest over-the-air (OTA) software update on my 2023 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor a few days ago, and ever since, the infotainment system has been incredibly buggy. It freezes constantly, Google Maps often doesn't load, and Spotify keeps crashing. Sometimes the whole screen goes black for a few seconds before restarting.

I've tried doing the soft reset (holding the home button for 20 seconds), which helps for a little while, but the issues always come back. Is anyone else experiencing these problems after a recent update? It's making the car really frustrating to drive, especially without reliable navigation.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's frustrating when a software update introduces new issues, especially with core functionalities like the infotainment system. This is a known concern with OTA updates across various automotive brands. Here's how to approach it:

  1. Common Causes of Post-Update Glitches:

    • Corrupted Installation: The update might not have installed perfectly, leading to corrupted files or incomplete configurations.
    • Software Conflicts: New software versions can sometimes conflict with existing settings or cached data.
    • Resource Overload: The system might be struggling with background processes or memory management after the update.
    • Temporary Server Issues: While less likely to cause persistent in-car issues, occasional connectivity problems can impact app performance.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Soft Reset (Already Tried): Holding the home button for 20 seconds performs a soft reset, which is good for clearing temporary glitches. Since it's not a permanent fix, you need to go further.
    • Factory Data Reset: This is a more drastic step but often resolves persistent software issues. Be aware that this will erase all personal data, settings, paired phones, and downloaded apps from the infotainment system, returning it to factory defaults. You'll need to sign back into your Google account and reconfigure everything. To do this, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
    • Check for Subsequent Updates: Sometimes, a quick follow-up patch is released to fix bugs introduced in a major OTA update. Check Settings > System > Software update to see if a newer version is available.
    • Clear Cache for Specific Apps: If only certain apps (like Maps or Spotify) are problematic, you might be able to clear their individual app caches via the Android Automotive OS settings, similar to how you would on an Android phone.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If a factory data reset does not resolve the issues, or if the system becomes completely unresponsive and you cannot perform the reset yourself.
    • If you receive any error messages or diagnostic codes related to the infotainment control module (e.g., U-codes indicating communication errors).
    • A Polestar Space can perform a full re-flash of the infotainment system software using their diagnostic tools, which is a deeper reset than an OTA update or factory reset. This ensures the software is installed cleanly and can often resolve stubborn issues. Schedule an appointment if the problem persists after attempting the above steps.
