Vehicle: 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor

Hi Polestar community,

I've recently noticed a musty, somewhat damp smell coming from the AC vents in my 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor. It's most noticeable when I first turn on the climate control. My first thought is the cabin air filter.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is the cabin air filter something I can easily replace myself on a Polestar 2? If so, any tips or specific tools needed would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to tackle this before it gets worse.

A musty smell from your HVAC vents is a very common indicator that your cabin air filter is dirty or that moisture has accumulated in the HVAC system. On your 2023 Polestar 2, replacing the cabin air filter is a straightforward DIY task.

Causes of Musty Smell:

  1. Clogged Cabin Air Filter: Over time, the filter collects dust, pollen, leaves, and moisture, creating a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
  2. Moisture in Evaporator: If the AC evaporator (located deep within the dashboard) doesn't dry out properly after use, mold can grow on its surface, leading to odors.

DIY Cabin Air Filter Replacement (Polestar 2):

  1. Purchase Filter: Obtain a new cabin air filter. Ensure it's specifically for the Polestar 2. Many online retailers and auto parts stores carry them.
  2. Locate Filter: The cabin air filter in the Polestar 2 is typically located behind the glove box on the passenger side.
  3. Access Panel: Gently open the glove box. You may need to remove a small access panel or unclip the glove box itself to reveal the filter housing. Refer to your owner's manual or a specific Polestar 2 DIY video for exact instructions on panel removal.
  4. Remove Old Filter: Once the housing is exposed, there's usually a cover with clips or screws. Carefully remove this cover and pull out the old, dirty filter. Note the direction of the airflow arrow on the old filter.
  5. Clean Housing (Optional): If there's visible debris or moisture, gently wipe down the filter housing area.
  6. Install New Filter: Insert the new filter, ensuring the airflow arrow points in the correct direction (usually down or towards the rear of the vehicle, but always check the old filter or manual).
  7. Reassemble: Secure the filter housing cover and reattach any panels or the glove box.

Additional Tips for Odor Control:

  • Run Fan Before Shutting Off: A few minutes before reaching your destination, turn off the AC (but keep the fan running) to help dry out the evaporator and prevent mold growth.
  • HVAC System Cleaner: If the smell persists after filter replacement, you might consider an automotive HVAC system cleaner/fogger, which can kill mold and bacteria on the evaporator. Follow product instructions carefully.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the smell persists or worsens after replacing the cabin air filter and trying evaporator drying techniques.
  • If you suspect a deeper issue with the HVAC system, such as a clogged drain tube for the evaporator, which can lead to excessive moisture buildup.
