Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with the charging port on my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. Lately, the charging port lock mechanism has been acting up. Sometimes, when I plug in the charger, it doesn't lock properly, and I get a warning on the dashboard. Other times, after charging, it simply won't release the cable, making it a real struggle to unplug.

I've tried restarting the car, locking and unlocking it multiple times, and even checking for any visible obstructions, but nothing seems to work consistently. It's becoming quite frustrating, especially when I'm in a hurry or at a public charging station.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? Is there a common fix or something I might be overlooking? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I have to take it into the service center.

This is a common concern for EV owners, as the charging port lock is a critical component for secure and safe charging. A malfunctioning charging port lock on your 2022 Polestar 2 can stem from several electrical or mechanical issues. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check for Physical Obstructions: Before anything else, ensure there's no debris, dirt, or ice obstructing the locking pin or the charging port itself. Even a small piece of grit can prevent the mechanism from fully engaging or disengaging. Use a flashlight to inspect the port thoroughly.
  2. Vehicle Software Reboot: Sometimes, a temporary software glitch can affect the charging system's control module. Try performing a soft reset of your vehicle's infotainment system (holding the home button for 20 seconds) or, if that doesn't work, a full vehicle restart (consult your owner's manual for the proper procedure).
  3. Inspect the Charging Cable: While less likely, a faulty charging cable (specifically its communication pins) could sometimes send incorrect signals to the vehicle, affecting the lock. Try using a different charging cable if possible to rule this out.

Potential Causes:

  • Faulty Actuator: The most common cause is a failing electric actuator responsible for moving the locking pin. Over time, these can wear out or develop internal electrical faults.
  • Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring leading to the charging port lock actuator can interrupt the signal, preventing it from operating correctly.
  • Charging Control Module (CCM) Malfunction: The CCM oversees the entire charging process, including the lock. A fault within this module could lead to erratic behavior.
  • Sensor Malfunction: Sensors that detect the presence of the charging cable or the lock's position might be faulty, sending incorrect data to the CCM.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after trying the basic troubleshooting steps, it's crucial to schedule an appointment with a Polestar service center. A technician will have specialized diagnostic tools to:

  • Read manufacturer-specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the charging system and body control module (BCM). While a generic OBD-II scanner might not show a specific code for the lock, a dealer-level tool can pinpoint the exact component failure.
  • Test the charging port lock actuator for proper voltage and operation.
  • Inspect the wiring harness for continuity and damage.
  • Check for any pending software updates that might address known issues with the charging system.

Ignoring this problem can lead to unsafe charging conditions or prevent you from charging your vehicle altogether.
