Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I've been having some frustrating issues with charging my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor lately. For the past few weeks, I've noticed that it's taking much longer to charge, both at home on my Level 2 charger and at public DC fast chargers. Sometimes, it even stops charging completely after a short period, requiring me to unplug and replug.

I've tried different charging cables and stations, but the problem persists. The car's display sometimes shows 'Charging speed reduced' or 'Charging interrupted' without much explanation. I'm worried this could be a bigger electrical problem. Has anyone else experienced this with their Polestar 2? Any ideas what might be going on?

Thanks for any insights!

Experiencing reduced or intermittent charging on your Polestar 2 can be concerning, as it points to an issue within the vehicle's electrical and charging systems. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and what steps you can take:

  1. Check Charging Infrastructure:

    • Home Charger: Ensure your home Level 2 EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) is functioning correctly. Try charging another EV if possible, or test your Polestar at a different known-good Level 2 charger.
    • Public Chargers: Note if the issue occurs consistently across multiple public DC fast chargers or only at specific stations. Faulty public chargers are not uncommon.
  2. Vehicle Diagnostics:

    • Onboard Charger (OBC) Issues: The Polestar 2 uses an integrated onboard charger. Problems with this unit can lead to reduced charging speeds or failures. A common diagnostic trouble code (DTC) associated with OBC issues is P0D27 (On-Board Charger (OBC) System Performance). Other related codes might include P0D28 (OBC Input Voltage Out of Range) or P0D29 (OBC Output Current Out of Range).
    • Battery Management System (BMS): The BMS monitors battery health, temperature, and cell balancing. If the BMS detects an anomaly (e.g., a cell imbalance, overheating), it can limit charging speed or stop charging to protect the battery.
    • Software Glitches: Sometimes, a simple software bug can cause charging anomalies. Ensure your Polestar 2's software is up to date. A soft reset (holding down the home button on the center display for 20 seconds) might temporarily resolve minor glitches.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If the problem persists across multiple charging locations and after a software reset, it's crucial to have your vehicle inspected by a certified Polestar service center.
    • They have specialized diagnostic tools to read specific Polestar DTCs and perform in-depth tests on the OBC, BMS, and high-voltage battery system.
    • Ignoring persistent charging issues can lead to further damage or leave you stranded. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage components yourself.

A qualified technician can accurately pinpoint whether the issue lies with the onboard charger, the battery management system, wiring, or a software-related fault requiring a more comprehensive update or module replacement.
