Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

My 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor is suddenly having trouble charging at public Level 2 stations. I plug it in, and after a few minutes, it throws a "Charging Cable Fault" error on the dashboard. It charges fine at home on my Wallbox.

I've tried different public chargers and cables, even different brands, but the same issue keeps happening. It's really frustrating when I'm on a trip and can't rely on public infrastructure.

What could be going on? Is this a known issue with the Polestar 2 or could it be something specific to my car?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

This 'Charging Cable Fault' error, especially when home charging works, often points to a communication issue between your Polestar 2 and the public charging station, or an internal vehicle component related to public charging.

Common Causes:

  • Communication Failure: The most frequent cause is a handshake problem between the car and the public charger (via the Control Pilot and Proximity Pilot pins in the charging cable).
  • Faulty Onboard Charger (OBC): While less common if home charging works, a partial failure in the OBC could affect its ability to negotiate with certain public chargers.
  • Charging Port Issues: Debris, bent pins, or corrosion in the vehicle's charging port can disrupt communication.
  • Software Glitch: Temporary bugs in the vehicle's charging management software.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Try Another Public Charger: Always rule out the specific charging station. If it happens at multiple, varied stations, the issue is likely with your car.
  2. Inspect Charging Port: Carefully examine your Polestar 2's charging port for any visible debris, bent pins, or signs of corrosion. Use a flashlight if needed. Ensure the charging cable is fully inserted and latched.
  3. Perform a Soft Reset: Hold the home button on your center display for about 20 seconds until the Polestar logo appears. This can sometimes clear minor electrical glitches.
  4. Check for Software Updates: Ensure your car's software is current (Settings > System > Software updates). Polestar often releases updates addressing charging compatibility and stability.
  5. Diagnostic Scan: A Polestar service center can run a diagnostic scan for specific charging-related fault codes, such as P0D2A (DC Charging Communication Error) or P0D2F (Onboard Charger Fault), even if you're only using AC Level 2.

When to See a Shop: If the issue persists across multiple public chargers, after you've thoroughly inspected the port, performed a soft reset, and confirmed your software is up-to-date, it's crucial to visit a Polestar service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint issues with the onboard charger, the charging port's internal wiring, or the communication module. Ignoring this can lead to being unable to charge away from home, severely limiting your vehicle's utility.
