Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on an issue I'm having with my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor. Yesterday, while driving on the highway, I suddenly felt a significant reduction in power. The car wouldn't accelerate properly, and a 'Service Required' message popped up on the driver display. It felt like the car went into a 'limp home' mode.

I managed to get it home, but the performance is definitely not normal. There weren't any strange noises or smells before this happened, it was quite sudden. I've tried turning it off and on again, but the message persists, and the power is still limited. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their Polestar 2 or other Polestar models?

I'm a bit concerned as this is my daily driver. Any ideas on what might be causing this before I take it to the service center?

ClearTheCode admin answer: Experiencing reduced power and a 'Service Required' message in your 2022 Polestar 2 is a critical issue that warrants immediate attention. This typically indicates a fault within the high-voltage system or electric drivetrain components.

Here are potential causes and steps to consider:

  1. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The 'Service Required' message is almost certainly accompanied by stored diagnostic trouble codes. Common codes related to reduced power in EVs can include:

    • P0A0F - Engine Disabled: This generic code indicates the vehicle's propulsion system has been disabled, often due to a severe fault.
    • Manufacturer-Specific Codes: Polestar vehicles will have their own specific codes (e.g., related to the Battery Management System (BMS), inverter, or electric motor control unit). A professional diagnostic tool is needed to read these.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Inverter/Converter Malfunction: The inverter converts DC battery power to AC for the motor. A fault here can severely limit power.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS monitors battery health, temperature, and cell balance. A fault could trigger a protective shutdown or power reduction.
    • Electric Motor Sensor Issues: Problems with speed sensors or temperature sensors within the electric motor can lead to incorrect readings and cause the system to limit power.
    • High-Voltage Wiring or Connector Issues: Loose or corroded connections in the high-voltage system can disrupt power flow.
    • Software Glitch: Less common for severe power reduction, but a software bug in the vehicle control unit could potentially cause erroneous warnings.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Given the nature of reduced power and a 'Service Required' message, it is crucial to have your vehicle inspected by a certified Polestar service center as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with a compromised high-voltage system can be unsafe and potentially lead to further damage.
    • Do Not Attempt DIY Repairs: High-voltage systems are extremely dangerous. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair these components yourself without proper training and safety equipment.
    • Towing Recommended: If the power reduction is significant or the vehicle feels unsafe to drive, arrange for towing to the service center.

The service center will use specialized diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the exact fault code and component responsible for the issue. They can then perform the necessary repairs, which might involve software updates, component replacement (e.g., inverter, motor, or battery module), or wiring repairs.
