Vehicle: 2021 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2021 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor. This morning, while driving to work, I suddenly felt a noticeable drop in power. It wasn't a complete shutdown, but acceleration was significantly reduced, almost like it was in a 'limp home' mode.

Shortly after, a 'Service Required' message popped up on the driver display, along with a warning light that looks like a wrench. I pulled over, turned the car off and on again, but the message and reduced power persisted. The battery was at about 60% charge, so it's not a low-charge issue.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their Polestar 2? I'm worried it might be something serious with the motor or battery system. Any advice on what this could be before I call the service center?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'Service Required' message combined with reduced power in your 2021 Polestar 2 indicates a fault within the high-voltage system, electric motor, or battery management system (BMS). This 'limp home' mode is a safety feature designed to protect critical components from further damage.

Here are the likely causes and steps:

  1. High-Voltage System Fault: Issues with the high-voltage battery, its contactors, or the wiring can trigger this. A common diagnostic trouble code (DTC) might be related to 'High Voltage System Isolation Fault' (e.g., P0AA6) or issues with specific battery modules.
  2. Electric Motor/Inverter Issue: The electric motor or its inverter (which converts DC battery power to AC for the motor) could be malfunctioning. Problems here can directly impact power delivery. DTCs like P0A00 (Motor Electronics Coolant Pump Control Circuit) or P0A01 (Motor Electronics Coolant Pump Performance) might appear if cooling is an issue, or more specific motor control faults.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) Error: The BMS monitors the health, temperature, and charge of individual battery cells. A fault in the BMS can lead to incorrect readings or protective shutdowns, limiting power to prevent damage. This could manifest as a P0C2D (Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Sense Circuit) or similar.
  4. Software Glitch: Less common for persistent issues, but sometimes a temporary software anomaly can cause erroneous warnings. A system reset (often by disconnecting the 12V battery for a few minutes, though this should be done carefully) might clear minor glitches, but it's unlikely to resolve a hardware fault.

When to see a shop: Given the 'Service Required' message and reduced power, it is critical to have your Polestar 2 inspected by a certified Polestar service center as soon as possible. Do not ignore this warning. Continuing to drive with a high-voltage system fault can potentially lead to further damage or safety risks. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read the specific fault codes (DTCs) from the high-voltage system and pinpoint the exact component causing the issue. Attempting DIY repairs on high-voltage systems is extremely dangerous and should only be performed by trained professionals.
