Vehicle: 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor

Hey everyone,

I've noticed a pretty significant drop in the estimated range on my 2022 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor lately. When I first got it, I was consistently seeing around 270 miles, but now it's often showing closer to 230-240 miles on a full charge, even with similar driving conditions and temperatures.

I usually charge to 80-90% at home using a Level 2 charger and only occasionally to 100% for longer trips. I try not to let it drop below 20%. Is this kind of degradation normal after about two years of ownership, or should I be concerned about a potential battery issue? I'm in the US, so temperatures can vary quite a bit, but this seems more pronounced than just weather effects.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's common for EV range to fluctuate due to various factors, but a significant, sustained drop warrants investigation. Here's what to consider and how to proceed:

  1. Understand Range Factors:

    • Temperature: Cold weather significantly impacts EV range, as the battery is less efficient and energy is used for cabin heating. Hot weather can also affect efficiency.
    • Driving Style: Aggressive acceleration, high speeds, and frequent braking consume more energy.
    • Tire Pressure: Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce range.
    • Terrain: Driving uphill requires more energy.
    • Accessory Use: HVAC, heated seats, and infotainment systems consume power.
  2. Monitor Battery Health:

    • Most EVs, including the Polestar 2, experience some degree of battery degradation over time. This is normal.
    • Check your car's 'Car Status' or 'Battery' menu in the infotainment system for any reported battery health percentages, if available.
    • Compare your current full charge range to the EPA estimated range, considering your driving style and conditions.
  3. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Software Update: Ensure your Polestar 2 has the latest software. Updates often include battery management system (BMS) optimizations that can improve range accuracy and efficiency.
    • Recalibrate BMS: Occasionally, fully charging to 100% and driving until the battery is very low (e.g., 5-10%) can help the BMS recalibrate its estimate of the battery's state of charge. Do this sparingly, as frequent deep discharges are not recommended for long-term battery health.
    • Check Tire Pressure: Verify all tires are inflated to the recommended pressure found on the driver's side door jamb.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If the range drop is sudden, severe, and not explained by external factors (weather, driving style).
    • If you notice any warning lights related to the high-voltage battery or charging system.
    • If a diagnostic scan reveals any fault codes (e.g., related to the BMS or battery modules).
    • Polestar offers an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty on the battery, guaranteeing 70% of its original capacity. If your degradation is below this threshold, it would be covered. Schedule a service appointment with your Polestar Space to have the battery health professionally assessed.
