Vehicle: 2019 Audi A3 S-Line

Hey Audi owners,

I've got a weird issue with my 2019 Audi A3 S-Line. The driver's side headlight, specifically the LED daytime running light (DRL) and sometimes the main low beam, has started flickering intermittently. It's not constant, but it happens often enough to be noticeable and concerning.

It seems to happen more when I first start the car or hit a bump. I've checked the connections I can see, and they seem snug. Could this be a ballast issue, a faulty LED module, or something with the wiring harness?

I'm worried about it failing completely, especially with winter coming up. Has anyone experienced similar flickering with their A3 or other Audi models? Any advice on what to check first?

Flickering headlights or DRLs on your 2019 Audi A3 S-Line can be an annoying and potentially unsafe issue. Given that it's an LED system, the causes are typically different from traditional halogen or HID lights.

  1. Loose Connection/Corrosion: The most common culprit for intermittent flickering is a loose or corroded electrical connection. This could be at the headlight assembly itself, the ballast (if applicable for the low beam), or further up the wiring harness. Vibrations from driving or bumps can exacerbate this.
  2. Faulty LED Module/Driver: Modern Audi LED headlights often use a separate LED driver module (sometimes integrated into the headlight assembly) that regulates power to the LEDs. If this module is failing, it can cause flickering or complete failure. This is a common point of failure for LED lighting systems.
  3. Ballast Failure (if applicable): While DRLs are typically pure LED, the main low beam might still use an HID bulb with a ballast, depending on your specific headlight configuration. A failing ballast can cause flickering or a 'pink' hue before failure.
  4. Wiring Harness Damage: Less common, but possible, is damage to the wiring harness leading to the headlight. This could be due to rodent damage, chafing, or a short circuit.
  5. Control Module Issue: The Body Control Module (BCM) or a dedicated lighting control module manages the headlights. A rare internal fault in this module could send incorrect signals, leading to flickering.

Relevant OBD Codes: Lighting issues often trigger 'B' (Body) codes related to the lighting system. Examples include:

  • B1000: Control Module Fault (generic, but can point to a lighting module)
  • B10A0: Headlight Driver Module Fault
  • B10A1: Daytime Running Light (DRL) Circuit Malfunction
  • B10A2: Low Beam Circuit Malfunction

When to See a Shop: Given the complexity of modern LED headlight systems, if a simple visual check of connections doesn't resolve the issue, it's best to have your A3 professionally diagnosed. An Audi dealership or a specialist with VCDS/ODIS diagnostic tools can read specific fault codes from the lighting control modules, which will accurately pinpoint whether the issue is with the LED driver, the module, or the wiring. Replacing an entire headlight assembly can be very expensive, so proper diagnosis is crucial to avoid unnecessary parts replacement.
