Vehicle: 2023 Audi A3 40 TFSI S line

Hi everyone,

I'm having a concerning issue with my relatively new 2023 Audi A3 40 TFSI S line. For the past few days, I've been getting an 'Audi Pre-Sense Malfunction' error message on the dash, and simultaneously, my adaptive cruise control (ACC) becomes unavailable. Sometimes it clears after restarting the car, but it often comes back within minutes of driving.

This is a major safety feature, and it's frustrating that it's not working reliably. I haven't had any collisions or bumps, so I'm not sure what could be causing it. Could it be a dirty sensor, or something more complex with the radar or camera systems?

Any other 2023 A3 owners experience this? What was the solution? Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An 'Audi Pre-Sense Malfunction' coupled with 'Adaptive Cruise Control Unavailable' on your 2023 Audi A3 points directly to an issue with the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), specifically the radar and/or camera sensors that power these features.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and recommended actions:

  1. Blocked or Dirty Sensors:
    • Primary Suspect: The most frequent cause is a blocked or dirty radar sensor (usually located behind the Audi rings in the grille or in the lower bumper) or the front-facing camera (mounted at the top of the windshield). Snow, ice, mud, or even a large bug can temporarily obstruct these sensors.
    • Action: Thoroughly clean the area around the Audi rings and the windshield in front of the camera. Ensure there's no debris.
  2. Sensor Misalignment:
    • Even a minor bump or impact (e.g., parking lot fender bender, hitting a curb hard) can slightly misalign the radar sensor. If the sensor isn't perfectly aligned, it can't accurately detect objects, leading to system errors.
    • OBD Codes: You might see codes like C1000 (Radar Sensor Fault), C1001 (Front Camera Malfunction), or U0423 (Invalid Data Received From Instrument Panel Control Module) if communication is affected.
  3. Wiring or Connector Issues:
    • Damage to the wiring harness leading to the radar sensor or front camera can cause intermittent or complete system failure.
  4. Software Glitch:
    • Less common for persistent issues, but a temporary software bug in the ADAS control module could cause these errors. A system reset or software update might be needed.

When to See a Shop:

If cleaning the sensors doesn't resolve the issue, or if the problem is intermittent and persistent, it's crucial to take your 2023 Audi A3 to an authorized Audi dealership. They have the specialized tools and expertise to:

  • Perform a diagnostic scan to read specific ADAS fault codes.
  • Check the live data from the radar and camera sensors.
  • Perform a precise calibration of the radar sensor and front camera. This requires specialized equipment and is critical for the correct functioning of Pre-Sense and ACC. Even a slight misalignment can render these systems inoperable.
  • Check for and install any relevant software updates for the ADAS control modules.

Given that these are critical safety features, it's important to address this malfunction promptly to ensure your vehicle's full safety capabilities are restored.
