Vehicle: 2022 Audi A3 40 TFSI Premium

Hello fellow A3 owners,

I'm experiencing some frustrating issues with the MMI system in my 2022 Audi A3 40 TFSI Premium. The screen seems to freeze up randomly, sometimes during navigation or when I'm trying to change radio stations. It becomes completely unresponsive to touch.

On top of that, my Bluetooth connection keeps dropping intermittently. My phone will disconnect and then reconnect a few seconds later, which is really annoying when I'm on a call or streaming music. I've tried restarting the car and my phone, but the problems keep coming back.

Is this a known bug with the newer MMI systems in the 8Y generation A3s? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this before I have to bring it into the dealership?

MMI system glitches, such as screen freezing and Bluetooth connectivity issues, are unfortunately not uncommon in modern vehicles with complex infotainment systems, including your 2022 Audi A3 40 TFSI Premium. Here’s a troubleshooting guide:

  1. Soft Reset the MMI: The first step is often a soft reset. In your 8Y A3, this is typically done by pressing and holding the volume knob (or the MMI power button, if separate) for about 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black and then reboots. This can often clear temporary software glitches.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Dealerships periodically release software updates for the MMI system that address bugs and improve stability. Your issues could be resolved with a simple update. This usually requires a visit to the dealer.
  3. Phone Troubleshooting:
    • Forget Device: On your phone, 'forget' the Audi MMI Bluetooth connection. Then, delete your phone from the MMI's list of paired devices. Re-pair from scratch.
    • Update Phone OS: Ensure your phone's operating system is fully updated.
    • Test with Another Phone: If possible, try connecting a different phone to see if the issue persists. This helps determine if the problem is with your phone or the car's MMI.
  4. SD Card/USB Media: If you use an SD card or USB drive for music, ensure it's not corrupted, as a faulty media source can sometimes cause MMI instability.

Common Causes:

  • Temporary software bugs or glitches within the MMI system.
  • Outdated MMI firmware.
  • Interference or incompatibility with specific phone models/OS versions.
  • Less commonly, a failing MMI control module.

When to See a Shop: If the soft reset and phone troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, it’s time to take your 2022 A3 to an Audi dealership. They can perform a deeper diagnostic scan, check for any relevant technical service bulletins (TSBs), and apply any available MMI software updates. If the problem is persistent and not resolved by software, they may need to investigate the MMI control unit itself.
