Vehicle: 2020 Audi A3 S Line

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2020 Audi A3 S Line with about 35,000 miles, and I've noticed a couple of issues lately. First, the car seems to be pulling slightly to the right, especially when I'm on a flat road and let go of the steering wheel for a second. It's not a violent pull, but it's definitely there.

Second, I just had my tires rotated, and the technician pointed out that my front tires (which were previously the rear) are showing uneven wear on the outer edges. The rears (now front) look fine. I had an alignment done about 15,000 miles ago. Could this be an alignment issue again, or something else with the suspension?

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Uneven tire wear and a vehicle pulling to one side on your 2020 Audi A3 S Line are classic symptoms of alignment issues or worn suspension components. Given the mileage and previous alignment, it's crucial to investigate the underlying cause.

Here are the primary suspects:

  1. Wheel Alignment: Even if you had an alignment done previously, hitting potholes or curbs can knock it out of spec. Improper toe settings (especially toe-out) are a common cause of outer edge tire wear and pulling. Camber issues can also contribute to uneven wear.
  2. Worn Suspension Components:
    • Control Arm Bushings: Worn bushings allow excessive movement in the suspension, leading to changes in alignment angles under load and causing the vehicle to pull and tires to wear unevenly.
    • Ball Joints: Loose or worn ball joints can also cause play in the suspension, affecting alignment and steering stability.
    • Tie Rod Ends: Worn inner or outer tie rod ends will introduce play into the steering, leading to alignment issues and pulling.
  3. Tire Issues: While less likely if only one side is wearing, a defective tire (e.g., a separated belt) can cause a pull. Also, incorrect tire pressure can exacerbate wear, but usually not asymmetrically.
  4. Brake Drag: A sticking brake caliper on one side can cause a slight drag, leading to a pull and potentially uneven tire wear on that side. This might not trigger an OBD code unless it's a severe electronic parking brake issue (e.g., P172D).

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly. Uneven tire wear means you're prematurely replacing expensive tires, and a pulling vehicle can be a safety concern, especially at higher speeds or during emergency maneuvers.
  • Have a reputable shop perform a comprehensive suspension inspection and a four-wheel alignment. They should check for play in all suspension components (control arms, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings) before performing the alignment. If any worn parts are found, they should be replaced first, then the alignment performed. While there aren't specific OBD codes for mechanical alignment issues, a thorough visual and physical inspection is key.
