Vehicle: 2020 Audi A4 Allroad Premium

My MMI system in my 2020 Audi A4 Allroad Premium has been acting up lately. It freezes randomly, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes it completely restarts itself while I'm driving. This happens with Apple CarPlay and even just using the built-in radio.

It's really frustrating, especially when I'm relying on navigation or trying to make a call. I've tried holding down the volume knob to force a restart, but it only helps temporarily.

Is this a known issue for this model year? Any quick fixes or does it sound like a trip to the dealership is inevitable?

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: While you've tried restarting, ensure you're doing a full system reset. For most B9 A4 Allroads, this involves pressing and holding the volume knob (rightmost knob on the center console) for about 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black and the MMI reboots. Sometimes, a longer hold is needed.
  2. Check for Software Updates: MMI software can become corrupted or outdated, leading to stability issues. Audi regularly releases software updates that can resolve bugs and improve system performance. A dealership can check for and install any available updates.
  3. Inspect SD Cards/USB Devices: If you have any SD cards or USB drives connected, try removing them. Corrupted media or incompatible file types can sometimes cause the MMI system to glitch or freeze.
  4. Component Failure: In some cases, the MMI control unit itself or related components (like the main head unit or display screen) can fail. This is less common but can manifest as persistent freezing or restarting.
  5. Battery Health: While indirect, a weak or failing 12V battery can sometimes cause erratic electrical behavior, including MMI issues, though this is usually accompanied by other symptoms.

When to see a shop: If the hard reset and media removal don't resolve the issue, or if the problem is persistent and frequent, it's best to schedule an appointment with an Audi dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools (like ODIS) that can pinpoint specific MMI control unit faults, check for module communication errors, and perform necessary software flashes or hardware replacements. Do not attempt to disconnect the battery yourself unless you are familiar with proper procedures, as it can sometimes lead to other electrical issues.
