Vehicle: 2019 Audi A4 Allroad Premium

Hey everyone,

I'm having some really annoying issues with the MMI system in my 2019 Audi A4 Allroad Premium. The screen frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive to touch or the control knob, and then sometimes completely restarts on its own. It's happening more and more often, making navigation, music, and phone calls a real pain.

It seems to happen randomly, not tied to any specific app or function. Sometimes it'll be fine for a whole drive, and other times it'll restart multiple times in 20 minutes. The car has about 55,000 miles on it.

Has anyone experienced this with their B9 A4 Allroad? Is there a known fix or something I can try before taking it to the dealership? I've tried holding the volume knob down for a soft reset, but it only helps temporarily.

MMI system freezing and restarting is a relatively common complaint across various Audi models, including your 2019 A4 Allroad. These infotainment glitches can be frustrating and point to several potential issues. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Software Glitches/Firmware Updates:

    • Cause: The MMI system is essentially a computer, and like any computer, it can experience software bugs or benefit from updated firmware. Older software versions might have stability issues that cause freezing or random reboots.
    • Action: While you've tried a soft reset (holding the volume knob down for 10-15 seconds), this is often a temporary fix. The best course of action is to have an Audi dealership check for and apply any available MMI software updates. These updates can often resolve a wide range of system instabilities.
  2. Corrupted Data/Memory Issues:

    • Cause: Over time, corrupted data (e.g., from navigation maps, phone contacts, or media files) or issues with the MMI's internal memory can lead to system instability.
    • Action: A factory reset of the MMI system (accessible through the MMI settings menu, usually under 'Factory Settings' or 'Reset') can sometimes clear corrupted data. Be aware this will erase all personal settings, paired phones, and navigation history. Only attempt this if you're comfortable reconfiguring everything.
  3. Hardware Failure (MMI Control Unit):

    • Cause: If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, the problem might be hardware-related. The MMI control unit itself (often located in the glovebox or dashboard) can fail due to internal component issues, overheating, or power supply problems.
    • Action: This requires professional diagnosis. The dealership will use their diagnostic tools to check for fault codes related to the MMI system. If the control unit is faulty, it will need to be replaced, which is a significant repair.
  4. Loose Connections/Power Issues:

    • Cause: Less common but possible, a loose electrical connection to the MMI unit or an intermittent power supply issue could cause unexpected restarts.
    • Action: This would require a professional to inspect the wiring and connections behind the MMI unit.

When to See a Shop: If a soft reset only provides temporary relief and a factory reset doesn't resolve the issue, it's time to visit an Audi dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment to read specific fault codes from the MMI system, determine if a firmware update is needed, or diagnose a hardware failure in the MMI control unit. Ignoring persistent MMI issues can be frustrating and may indicate a deeper electrical problem.
