2016 S4 DSG Service - Rough Shifts After 60k Miles?

Vehicle: 2016 Audi S4 Prestige

Hey everyone, I've got a 2016 Audi S4 Prestige with about 62,000 miles on it. I've noticed lately that the DSG transmission feels a bit rough, especially during downshifts and sometimes when accelerating from a stop. It's not a violent jerk, but definitely noticeable and not as smooth as it used to be.

I checked my service records, and it looks like the DSG fluid and filter haven't been changed yet. I know Audi recommends it around 40k miles, so I'm a bit overdue. Could this be the cause of the rough shifting, or should I be worried about something more serious?

I'm planning to tackle this DIY if possible, but I want to make sure I'm not missing any other diagnostics. Any advice on the procedure or what else to check would be great!

It's highly probable that your rough shifting issues are related to overdue DSG (S-Tronic) transmission fluid and filter service. Audi's recommended interval for this critical maintenance is typically every 40,000 miles for optimal performance and longevity of the transmission.

Causes of Rough Shifting:

  1. Degraded Fluid: Over time, transmission fluid breaks down, losing its lubricating properties and ability to dissipate heat effectively. This can lead to increased friction and wear within the clutch packs and gears, resulting in rougher shifts.
  2. Clogged Filter: The DSG filter traps metallic particles and debris. A clogged filter restricts fluid flow, leading to inadequate lubrication and pressure, which directly impacts shift quality.
  3. Mechatronic Unit Strain: While less common, prolonged use with old fluid can put additional strain on the mechatronic unit, which controls the shifting process.

Recommended Steps:

  1. Perform DSG Service: This should be your immediate priority. This involves draining the old fluid, replacing the internal filter (and sometimes the external filter depending on the specific transmission), and refilling with the correct type and amount of new DSG fluid. Ensure you use genuine Audi fluid or an approved equivalent.
  2. Adaptation Reset: After the fluid change, it's often beneficial to perform a transmission adaptation reset using a diagnostic tool (like VCDS or OBDeleven). This allows the transmission's control unit to 'relearn' optimal shift points and clutch engagement with the new fluid.
  3. Monitor Performance: Drive the vehicle normally after the service and observe if the shifting quality improves. It may take a few drive cycles for the transmission to fully adapt.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the rough shifting persists or worsens significantly after the DSG service.
  • If you notice any warning lights on your dashboard related to the transmission (e.g., a flashing gear indicator).
  • If you hear any unusual noises (grinding, clunking) coming from the transmission.
  • If you're uncomfortable performing the DIY service, as it requires specific tools (e.g., VCDS, fluid pump) and adherence to strict temperature guidelines during the fill procedure.
