Vehicle: 2018 Audi A4 2.0T Premium Plus

Hey everyone, I'm having a persistent issue with my 2018 Audi A4 2.0T Premium Plus. Recently, the car started to run really rough, especially at idle, and the EPC light came on along with the Check Engine Light.

I hooked up my OBD-II scanner, and it's throwing a P0301 code, indicating a misfire on cylinder 1. I've already tried swapping the coil pack from cylinder 1 to cylinder 2 to see if the misfire moves, but it stayed on cylinder 1. I also checked the spark plug, and it looked a bit fouled.

Could this be an injector issue, or something more serious? The car feels sluggish and vibrates quite a bit. Any advice on what to check next before I take it to the shop?

It sounds like you've already done some good initial diagnostics by checking the coil pack and spark plug for cylinder 1. A persistent P0301 code points directly to an issue with that specific cylinder.

Here are the next steps and potential causes:

  1. Compression Test: Perform a compression test on cylinder 1. Low compression could indicate a serious internal engine issue such as a burnt valve, worn piston rings, or a head gasket problem. This is a crucial diagnostic step.
  2. Fuel Injector Test: Since you've ruled out the coil pack (by swapping) and inspected the spark plug, the next most likely culprit for a single-cylinder misfire is the fuel injector. A clogged, faulty, or leaking injector can cause a lean or rich condition leading to misfires. You can try to listen to the injector with a stethoscope for proper clicking or have it professionally tested.
  3. Wiring Inspection: Check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the coil pack and fuel injector on cylinder 1 for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  4. Vacuum Leaks: While less common for a single-cylinder misfire, a vacuum leak near cylinder 1's intake runner could potentially affect its air/fuel mixture, though this usually results in multiple misfire codes or lean codes (P0171/P0174).

When to see a shop:

  • If the compression test reveals low compression on cylinder 1, immediate professional diagnosis is required, as this indicates an internal engine repair.
  • If you're uncomfortable testing fuel injectors or tracing electrical wiring, a qualified Audi specialist has the diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause efficiently.
  • Continued driving with a misfire can damage the catalytic converter due to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust system, leading to more expensive repairs.
