Vehicle: 2020 Audi A4 45 TFSI Quattro

Hi all,

My 2020 Audi A4 45 TFSI Quattro has recently started throwing some warning lights. The ABS and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) lights are both illuminated on the dashboard. Along with this, my adaptive cruise control has stopped working, and I'm getting a message that it's 'unavailable.'

I've noticed that sometimes after starting the car, the lights are off, but they come back on after driving a short distance, especially after hitting a bump or turning. I'm concerned about the safety implications of these systems being offline. Could this be a sensor issue, or something more serious?

Has anyone experienced this with their A4? Any advice on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like your 2020 Audi A4 is experiencing a common issue related to wheel speed sensors, which are critical for ABS, ESC, and adaptive cruise control systems. When one or more of these sensors malfunction, the related safety systems are disabled.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure:
    • Primary Suspect: A faulty wheel speed sensor (also known as an ABS sensor) is the most common cause. These sensors monitor the rotational speed of each wheel and send data to the ABS/ESC control module. If the module receives inconsistent or no data, it triggers the warning lights and disables dependent systems.
    • Common OBD Codes: You'll likely find codes such as C0031 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit), C0034 (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit), C0037 (Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit), or C003A (Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit). A generic P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction) might also appear.
  2. Damaged Wiring or Connector:
    • The wiring harness leading to the wheel speed sensor can get damaged from road debris, corrosion, or even rodent activity. Check the visible wiring and connectors for any signs of fraying, cuts, or loose connections.
  3. Tone Ring Issues:
    • Less common, but the magnetic tone ring (reluctor ring) on the axle or wheel bearing, which the sensor reads, can become damaged or corroded, leading to incorrect readings.
  4. ABS Control Module:
    • In rare cases, the ABS control module itself could be faulty, but this is usually accompanied by more persistent and severe braking issues.

When to See a Shop:

While you can visually inspect the wiring, diagnosing and replacing a wheel speed sensor often requires lifting the vehicle and using an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes. It's highly recommended to take your Audi to a qualified mechanic or dealership. They can accurately diagnose which sensor is faulty using live data readings and ensure proper replacement and calibration, restoring your safety systems. Driving with disabled ABS/ESC can compromise your vehicle's handling and braking performance, especially in emergency situations.
