Vehicle: 2020 Audi A4 Premium Plus

Hey forum,

I'm having an issue with my 2020 Audi A4 Premium Plus, and I'm hoping someone here might have some insight. For the past few weeks, I've been getting intermittent 'Low Coolant' warnings on my dashboard. I've topped it off a couple of times, but the level keeps dropping.

I also noticed a faint pinkish residue on the garage floor, right under the front of the engine, and a similar residue around what looks like the water pump area when I peek under the hood. The car hasn't overheated yet, but I'm worried it's only a matter of time.

Is this a common problem with these A4s? What should I be looking for? Any advice on how to proceed would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Coolant leaks, especially from the water pump assembly, are a well-documented issue across various Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG) vehicles, including your 2020 Audi A4. The pink residue you're seeing is a tell-tale sign of Audi's specific G13 or G12evo coolant.

1. Common Causes:

  • Water Pump Failure: The primary suspect. The plastic components of the water pump housing and thermostat assembly are prone to cracking or developing leaks over time, often at the seams or where the unit bolts to the engine block.
  • Thermostat Housing: Often integrated with the water pump, the plastic thermostat housing can also crack and leak.
  • Hose Connections: Less common, but a loose or degraded hose clamp or a cracked coolant hose can also cause leaks.

2. Diagnostic Steps & Solutions:

  1. Visual Inspection: Confirm the leak's origin. Using a flashlight, carefully inspect the area around the water pump, thermostat housing, and all coolant hoses for fresh pink residue or drips. The water pump is typically located on the front of the engine, often driven by the accessory belt.
  2. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): A persistent low coolant level or an engine running outside its optimal temperature range can trigger codes. Look for:
    • P2181: Performance Malfunction in Cooling System (a common VAG code for cooling issues).
    • P0128: Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature) – can indicate a thermostat stuck open or a significant leak preventing proper warm-up.
  3. Pressure Test: A professional can perform a cooling system pressure test. This involves pressurizing the system and observing where the pressure drops, pinpointing the exact leak location.

3. When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If you are consistently losing coolant, especially if you see visible drips or residue. A significant coolant leak can lead to engine overheating, which can cause severe and costly engine damage.
  • If you receive a 'Low Coolant' warning more than once after topping off.
  • If your engine temperature gauge starts to rise above normal operating levels.
  • Given the complexity of the water pump/thermostat assembly replacement on these engines, it's highly recommended to have a qualified Audi technician perform the repair. They have the specialized tools and knowledge to do it correctly and ensure no air pockets remain in the system after refilling.
