Vehicle: 2018 Audi A4 S Line

Hi all,

I'm experiencing a concerning clunking noise from the front end of my 2018 Audi A4 S Line. It happens mostly when I go over bumps, speed bumps, or uneven pavement. It's a distinct, metallic-sounding clunk, and it seems to be coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more pronounced on the passenger side.

The car has about 60,000 miles on it. I haven't noticed any major changes in handling, but the noise is definitely getting louder and more frequent. Could this be something serious, like control arms, or something simpler?

Any advice on what to look for or common issues with these models would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2018 Audi A4 S Line, especially over bumps, is a common symptom of worn suspension components. At 60,000 miles, several parts could be reaching the end of their service life.

Here are the most common culprits and what to check:

  1. Control Arm Bushings: Audi A4s, particularly in the B9 generation, are known for control arm bushing wear. There are multiple control arms in the front suspension, and worn bushings can cause significant clunking as the suspension articulates.
  2. Sway Bar End Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the suspension. Worn or loose end links are a very common source of clunking noises over uneven surfaces.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the front struts can wear out, leading to noise. If the strut bearing is failing, you might also hear a popping or groaning when turning the steering wheel at low speeds.
  4. Ball Joints: Worn ball joints in the control arms can also produce a clunking sound. These are critical for steering and suspension integrity.
  5. Loose Components: Less likely, but ensure all suspension bolts are properly torqued. Sometimes, a loose component after a previous service can cause noise.

When to See a Shop:

  • A clunking noise indicates mechanical wear that can affect handling, tire wear, and safety. It's highly recommended to have this inspected by a professional as soon as possible.
  • While there aren't specific OBD codes for mechanical suspension noises, a shop can perform a thorough visual inspection, check for play in components, and potentially use a chassis ear to pinpoint the exact source of the noise. Ignoring these noises can lead to accelerated wear of other components and potentially compromise vehicle safety.
